Willie Fernie. Celtic mazy dribbler of the 50s early 60s pre-Stein. Could and would play anywhere. Jimmy Johnstone. Most entertaining footballer ever. Celtic legend and Lisbon Lion Sandy Lyle. I actually threw a pint glass through my window in excitement, when he won the Masters. Saw him win The Open at Royal St Georges Paul Lawrie. A credit to golf and especially Scottish golf. You'll never hear a bad word said about the man....even if he is an Aberdeen fan.
Top of the list Jock Stein

Phil Taylor - easily the best Darts player of all time, and one of the most dominant champions of all time. Chances are his record will never be beaten. But a portly bloke from Stoke doesn't an "athlete" make.

But a portly bloke from Stoke doesn't an "athlete" make. well i hate this question(not yours as you asked your fav - not the best) but for the heck i will answer the best!! because where do you draw the line..its not a defined question.. is the question - what athletic person is the best ever - or is it who is the most athletic person ever that is a sportsman(the question doesn't specify any wins or being a professional)? because the definition for a sport is a competitive game that requires physical activity. darts and snooker fit the catergory . golf also... bowling as well. even crown green bowling. what we need to define the best athlete is probably a case of first working out the most athletic sport that has a very large pool of players then the best of them.. thats tough. but tennis nor football require an immense athletic ceiling - must of us could get fit enough to match pro footballers and tennis players .. So i will define the triathlon as the most athletic sport and alistair browning as the best.. because it is all about how fit and athletic you are and your ceiling being the highest. maybe i could argue speed is the best measure - so bolt wins - that's on the person. My fav athletes i have lots nick faldo seve ballesterous roonie osullivan jimmy white gaza michael trescothick ian botham wif zaha nigel martin freddie flintoff joe root harry kane AJ Fury Tyson Eubank Eddie Hall Geoff capes Bradman Shane warne alex higgins Jonny wilkinson jono Lumo Martn Johnson David campase Phil taylor sterling moss jackie stewart tony jacklin brian o'driscal Zinedine zidane eric cantona jimmy greaves maldini ibramovich kevin de bruyne steve davis

I've had others like Steve Yzerman, Frank Thomas, Ty Law... yet Wendel has been for me since I was a kid & he's been an excellent Leafs-hockey-life ambassador post-career.

Fascinating characters (all of them).
