The reviews are in alphabetical order and posted underneath each possible replacement in the forum below.
NOTE: Many of these websites are new and in a state of flux, and are subject to change hourly. I will update my reviews as often as possible.
There is currently a torrent available with IMDb message board archives on it, and combined with Archiveteam.org's archive, it appears the complete IMDb message board could be replicated on a website—by anyone. I expect to see more of these in the future. The legality of this is examined in IMDb Message Board Archives: Are They Legal?
Getting back to the reviews:
I have now examined 34 possible replacements for IMDb message boards. I like forums on individual movies and TV shows, so that's my bias. Most possible replacements were eliminated due to either lack of individual title forums, or lack of content in general (and not a lot of potential to acquire more). Below are reviews of eight of them that seem to have the most potential. Some are lean on content right now, but I expect they will acquire more in the future, so I will check back and revise my reviews accordingly.
I applaud the creators of these message boards and forums for what they have accomplished. Any criticism should be taken constructively, with the hope that it will help create the best possible replacement for IMDb’s message boards.
All of these forums could be successful, but it's worth noting that a big part of IMDb's message boards' appeal was the large, vibrant community that contributed to it. You could gain all kinds of different perspectives and insights, and find discussions on the most obscure titles. If that community gets too fragmented, no forum out there will have the same appeal. Perhaps mergers should be discussed, but, then again, maybe it's better to let the market decide.
It's also worth considering that copyright violations and trademark infringements can be a huge deal. "Technology companies see trademark power grabs and suing each other as recreational sport." Facebook trademarks the word 'face'
