The Saturday lunchtime kick-off sees Stoke host Leicester. The Foxes haven't lost in five games, picking up eight points from twelve from their last four PL outings as well as seeing off Leeds in the League Cup. There's a mini resurgence going on at Leicester (15/8); an edge of threat, willing, re-invention. This began before Claude Puel signed on the dotted line and, who knows, he may enhance things at the King Power Stadium. Stoke (17/10) meanwhile are the on/off form team of late. Last five PL outings, most recent first, reads W L L W L. The fact remains you just never know what you're gonna get with Sparky's boys.
Just four 3pm kick-offs this Saturday and first up it's Huddersfield (17/10) v WBA (2/1) My feelings on WBA have been made clear on here and with a scant Huddy injury list (and Dutch winger La Parra set to make himself available for Huddersfield after groin trouble) it may be that Pulis' bus just might not be ample enough to come away with the targeted one point (as usual)
Newcastle's (1/1) three-match good run came to an end at Turf Moor on Monday with Hendrick's second-half pot which lifted the Clarets to 7th, not a position they'll be looking to relinquish with but one goal separating them from 6th placed Liverpool. But back to Newcastle, and as for their opponents, Bournemouth (who finished 9th last season) well, they sit in 19th having won just two from ten. Knock and King may return for Bournemouth (16/5) but it will surely take something big to take anything away from St James Park.
Southampton (4/6) welcome Burnley (an overpriced 11/2 surely? Double Chance Burnley goes at 5/4 with the draw at 11/4 - indeed, Burnley may figure in the Bet of the Day) Only Wood and Marney are slight doubts for Burnley while the Saints may see the return of Austin after recent injury. I still say Burnley's odds are there to be molested. Look at their away record so far : wins at CFC and Everton, a point at Anfield, another point at Spurs, and only a 3-0 defeat at Man City to tarnish the books. Southampton's home record is W2 L2 D1.
Swansea have lost 4 of their 5 home games so far and remain bottom of the 'Home Games' league table, a point beneath Palace and Bournemouth. They host mid-table Brighton (12/5) whose destruction of West Ham and demoralization of Bilic two weeks ago in London should serve them well as they go in search of their second away victory of the season. Swansea (7/5) have lost a remarkable four of their first five PL home games, and again, as with Burnley at Southampton, the away team's odds beggar belief, to my eyes.
The 5.30pm kick-off sees West Ham (17/4) take on Liverpool (4/6 - again, are you sure about some of these odds? Sure, West Ham are poor, but a measly 4/6 for the 'Pool win?!) West Ham, if not for that dreadful injury-time play by Antonio against Palace last week where with seconds remaining he failed to hog the ball at the corner flag and instead pumped the ball back into play only for Palace to equalize from his actions, would have found themselves in 14th spot right now instead of 16th. Coutinho, Mane, Lallana all out for Liverpool, I think, and it might be a hell of a battle for Klopp's boys if the Hammers decide that they want Bilic as their boss after all.
The last two Sundays have not been Super ones, you have to say. But that all changes this time around.
At 12pm Spurs (2/7) are at it against Hodgson's Palace (11/1) Still no sign of Benteke and Wickham for Palace but with Lloris out for Spurs, Palace have some cause for consolation in the injury department.
There's no pausing for breath before the 2.15pm set-to at The Ethiad where a rampant Man City (4/9) will be aiming to belittle an Arsenal side (13/2) that could only muster a 0-0 draw at home on Thursday to Crvena Zvezda in the Europa.
There's more, on this truly Super Sunday. It's off to Stamford Bridge at 4.30pm for CFC (6/4) versus Man Utd (11/5) The draw comes in at 11/5. Rumours are abound that Abramovich has 'made a decision' about Conte's future or non-future at CFC, and most of these rumours are emanating from goddamn Spain for crying out loud. With stuff like this flying about, and the almost guaranteed certainty that Maureen will come for a point and not to lose, it's almost a given not to believe that CFC's confidence will not be at its highest for this one. In Rome in midweek the failure, the absolute f***ing breakdown (not that there was anything structured to break down in the first place) was a shocker, a real rotter that needs addressing. Taking off Cahill in the second half at 0-2 down and bringing on Willian - that was Conte looking to redress the balance, looking for goals whilst gambling with a depleted back line. It backfired. Roma took full advantage and instead of pulling goals back, CFC left themselves exposed and ready to be assaulted with further onslaught to their netting. Will Conte risk Kante? Will Matic turn it on just for fun? Will Conte and Maureen shake hands at some point? I don't know, but for me it's game of the day. It's a pity I'm on shift but I'm hoping for a good MOTD2 highlights show.
Finally, at 4.30pm also, it's Everton, fresh from a 3-0 drubbing at Lyon in the Europa, at home to Watford (13/5) who despite two PL defeats on the trot remain in 8th place. Everton (6/5) meanwhile are at least free from European distraction and can maybe fully focus on their Premier League survival job.
Obviously no Monday Night Football this week, so enjoy your Corrie or Emmerdale or, like me, both!
