1. Like most people, I never read Norse mythology. So Hela is the Norse mythology version of Hades? And the Valkyrie (a group of female Warriors) are the Norse mythology version of the Amazons?
2. So Odin was really a brutal and ruthless conqueror and total dickhead until he got scared that his daughter had become too ambitious and would overthrow him so that's when he banished his daughter to the underworld and changed his ways?

I liked the anti-colonialism themes in the story. Hela represented the old ways of conquest that Asgard once embraced, Thor started off the same way but his character development means he'd changed since then. The people of Asgard would rather die than go back to those older ways, and this is symbolized by Thor deliberately destroying Asgard to eliminate Hela.
He and the people will make a new home elsewhere, one that doesn't have to be built on conquest and death to make something.

That is actually exactly it. Odin was kind of a dick and then grew as a character over time and realized he was wrong. Asgard was just a place and a place built on blood and conquest. That is the reason Thor let it die. He had to or Hela would go back to the way things were.

Hela was the God of Death right?
Hades wasn't actually the God of Death, that's something people often get confused. He was really just the God of the Underworld. Thanatos was the God of Death in Greek mythology I think.
Otherwise yeah I think you're right about Odin.

Odin was something of a fickle God. More a God of kings, he was known to switch sides in a battle if the other side offered better sacrifices There was a king kept sacrificing sons believing Odin would extend his life.( each son bought so many years so then he needed to sacrifice another) The people rose up to save the last son. The dead went to Hel or to Odin or Freya. Odin & Freya were both into magic. Lokasenna - Among the insults-Loki accuses Odin of using a form of sorcery commonly practiced by women. Odin accused the shapeshifter Loki of spending 8 winters on earth milking cows as a maid & having babies. After the Aesir-Vanir war a laborer offered to rebuild the wall around Asgard in 3 season for the payment of the goddess Freya. The God's placed all sorts of restrictions to prevent the completion but allowed him to use his stallion which turned out to do the work of 2 horses so the laborer was easily in sight of finishing. The other gods blamed Loki, ordering him to stop the progress. You really should read the Norse myths. Very interesting There's one where Mjolnir is stolen by Giants who demand Freya as ransom for it's return. Loki suggests Thor disguise himself as the bride to be to get his hammer back.

That was the implication I got with #2 though perhaps he softened between then and now at the time of Ragnarok. It was an interesting direction with Odin that was kind of swept under the rug afterwards. Though I have skimmed some articles that read an anti-militarism/anti-altright angle in the script.

DC-Fan would get away with murder on Admin's watch if it ever came to it. Scabab SHOULD be locking every topic he makes without exception, because they're all made with the same intent and always turn out the same way. Don't get me started on the modding situation here. Apparently I'm quite the rabble rouser!

That actually had nothing to do with me. DC-Fan would get away with murder on Admin's watch if it ever came to it. Scabab SHOULD be locking every topic he makes without exception, because they're all made with the same intent and always turn out the same way. I'm not gonna lock the thread just because he asked two questions. He hasn't even replied in this thread. It turned into an insult fest because of other people who are so easily baited or get all in a panic when the series they prefer (MCU) is criticised in any way.

I didn't google the answers to the questions. I thought Thor fans would be into Norse mythology so they could answer the questions pretty quickly.
As for the 2nd question, I'm not making up anything. It was said in the movie that Odin and Hela conquered other civilizations. When Hela appointed that Asgardian to be her Executioner, she said she was Odin's Executioner so Odin must've executed a lot of people so Odin must've been a brutal and ruthless conqueror.

Thanks to everyone who answered the questions. Like I said, I never read Norse mythology so I was trying to find out more about it. I have another question:
3. Was Asgard a misogynistic society? The reason I ask is because, as Odin's oldest child, Hela should've been the legal and rightful heir to the throne. So Thor, Loki, Heimdall, Valkyrie and all the other Asgardians who fought against Hela were committing treason against their Queen.
Unless Asgardian law gives preference to male children over female children. Then in that case, Asgardian law would give Thor a stronger legal claim to the throne than Hela had.
