... just hearing a rumour that Ozil wants Jack Wilshere's number 10 shirt, if he doesn't get it he wont sign a new contract.
How do you feel about footballers demanding certain squad numbers?
Alan Shearer stole Les Ferdinand's squad number when he went to Newcastle.
Zlatan stole Martial's squad just over a year ago.
Now possibly Ozil stealing Wilshere's number.
For me, I think it would raise a red flag about the player. I mean I don't think I would care what number I wore, but if someone actually tried to steal my number I think I would be pissed off because they are essentially saying "You are a piece of shit and I am better than you, and I don't give a fuck about the harmony of this team either".

To me it shows a lack of imagination "I want No. 9 because all the great strikers had No.9....) etc.etc.
When Gary Hooper joined Celtic he won me over without kicking a ball. He asked for squad No.88 because that was similar to the year the club were formed.... 1888. Ozil and others need to get their heads out of their arses.

I think you join a team, you get the next available number.
The numbers are there to aid referees, managers, commentators, and spectators. Not a little ego trip for the players.

Ozil has got some nerve. At least Shearer and Ibra were bona fide legends.

Shouldn't have squad numbers. Just line up 1-11 like the good old days.

Ozil has got some nerve. At least Shearer and Ibra were bona fide legends. True. I think it takes some arrogance though to come into the a new club and demand another player's number. I think the main thing I would want to be doing in the first couple of days, apart from impressing my team mates, would be to try and start building up relationships and friendships with my new colleagues. Obviously it is a competitive environment and you would already have an eye on someone's starting place, but I don't think I'd want to unnecessarily come in and step on someone's toes. I can't imagine having that level of arrogance. I'm not sure what is worse actually, coming into a new club and demanding someone's number, or demanding an existing team-mate's number.

I've heard it said by many ex-pros that there is hardly any mingling and camaraderie between teammates these days. They all isolate themselves with ipods etc and practical jokes and the like are right out the window nowadays. It's a hugely well paid job played by mercenaries who have no interest in the history, rivalries or fans of the club whom they play for. Sky TV and Gazza's tears killed top level football in the UK which is why I don't really follow that division very much. The championship is going the same way and will no doubt be reduced to 20 teams in the next decade and I doubt my team Millwall would survive the cut as so many others have had the grossly unfair parachute payments which destroys any real belief in a level playing field.
