When Voight, Cox, and Beatty giggle about Reynolds going off into the woods that night, and Reynolds comes back saying he thought he heard a noise, were the mountain men stalking them even then? I'm guessing they were. I don't think "Lewis" would be so on edge about a deer, and would recognize the sound of a deer. I can recognize the sound of an animal in the bush when I'm hiking.

60% chance. Could have been the case. Or just Boorman ramping up the tension and making them paranoid.

That was the impression I got out of that scene. That there was the possibility of the hillbillies stalking and watching them in the night. Pretty creepy.
