He says it was the one installment that was deemed 'sink or swim' for the MCU. TEXT: “It was sink or swim before Captain America and then suddenly, oh, it was fine after that. We make Iron Man 2 and Avengers and everything’s tickety-boo. But everybody who was there knows that that was an incredibly sweaty time. That’s certainly how they felt. No question that Kevin Feige used to say to me, ‘This is the single most difficult tonal challenge for us, to make this movie work in itself and fit into this large universe.’ In fact, I think Thor, and in Chris Hemsworth’s performance, becomes an absolutely integral part.” screenrant.com/kenneth-branagh-thor-sink-swim-mcu/

Cap as well, but those two were the biggest challenges, and if they had failed, the entire MCU was at risk.
That's why Thor 1 deserves a very high degree of respect. They really committed to focusing on the characters, and they got it right.

I'll be honest. I thought Thor was gonna suck. Not because of the character's powers and his appearance. Just the trailers sucked as I remember.

I agree. Thor was the only one I was actually worried for. I didn't know how it could work. It just seemed so outlandish and "tonally" incongruent. And yet, it quickly became my second favorite of Phase 1. I loved it.
And it really served to open up the entire universe more than any of the other phase 1's.

I remember before Avengers was released many thought it was going to be a dud. Everyone was more excited about TDKR 😂
