One of the more interesting things I thought after the Ragnarok, was if Skurge was a villain or not. Ultimately we know he helps, but did he do the right thing by siding with Hela the rest of the film? I say yes. He knew standing up to her could only result in death, and after watching Fandral and Volstagg stand no chance, there was nothing he could do until wait for some kind of opportunity. And as hard as the choice was for him, even if he had begun performing executions he was correct. The reason we know it was correct is because the moment he has a chance to save lives, he recognizing it, and takes the opportunity to do so.

It was basically self preservation.

It was an entirely believable reaction. He knew he had no chance of survival and when Hela offered him a chance at life he said yes...like most anyone would do. Then he realizes what life under Hela would be and turns on her, and then realizes that it's not enough to survive either but to be a real Asgardian of note (which is what he always wanted) he has to do what memorable Asgardians did.
He stood alone at the Bifrost, and that is enough.

Tragic really, he had no choice but made the most noble one he could when the time came.

Yes, he was just surviving out of necessity. I was left wondering how far he'd go for Hela throughout the movie, even despite his obvious doubts about her and this lot in life.

He was to Thor: Ragnarok what Renault was in Casablanca. He blows with the wind and the wind happens to be from Hela.
