collider.com/are-you-afraid-of-the-dark-movie/I'm surprised this is the first post I'm seeing for this. It's got the writer of IT as well so that gets me even more excited. I think there's a lot they could do with a movie. How do you think they'll do it? I kinda hope they go the Goosebumps approach or maybe the Trick R Treat route where it's multiple stories, but they all connect in the end,but I think they'll most likely go the Goosebumps route.

Whatever they do it better not suck, this is a legacy they're dealing with.

Oh, Good God. My apologies for being skeptical but--yes, I'm skeptical. Part of that is exactly because the show is not some great masterpiece of television programming; that's part of its charm, and any big-budget (or even small-budget) movie will want to "fix the flaws" when the flaws are what make the television series so endearing and, indeed, so enduring.

I could see it definitely losing a certain campy verve.

I'm surprised I'm the only one excited for this.

spooner5020Well, respectfully, why do you think it will be good? I'm more than happy to see it, but I suppose my cynicism is going ahead full-force.

It'll suck. Pure and simple.

They probably looked at the 'Goosebumps' movie being a hit. Then looked at each other saying "how do we get that?"

They probably looked at the 'Goosebumps' movie being a hit. Then looked at each other saying "how do we get that?" ^ This. They'll do this instead of just having some kids around a campfire telling spooky stories. Any Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie would be an anthology of 3 or 4 scary stories about 30 minutes in length being told by the kids, ending with Midnight Society dispersing for the evening after dousing the campfire. Do you agree, Nalkarj?

I absolutely agree on both points, @weirdraptor . I agree with politicidal about its being a cash-in on Goosebumps and related nostalgia—indeed, I was just about to post something similar myself—and with you about what an AYAotD movie should look like. What are the odds that they turn it into a special-effects-driven blockbuster, though? Pretty strong, unfortunately.

spooner5020Well, respectfully, why do you think it will be good? I'm more than happy to see it, but I suppose my cynicism is going ahead full-force. I'm not saying it will be good. The writer of IT has me excited for this movie. Also I'd rather see a movie then see a bad remake of the series.

spooner5020That's fair. I still believe it won't be very good, but I too would probably rather see a movie than a bad remake (though I'd prefer nothing at all--leave the show be), as long as it doesn't affect the reputation or popular conception of the original show.
