When it comes to citing the DCEU’s track record with villains, Ares seems to be considered below average but my question is, what exactly made him such a bad villain? He at least had a clear motivation, and wasn’t just some CGI monstrosity. Is it just because he wasn’t played by an intimidating actor?

Thought he was too old for the part. Not believable at all.

I don't think there was anything wrong with Ares. I think the final climactic conflict between him and WW was somewhat weak. And frankly, it was virtually identical to the final battles in MOS, BvS, and SS.
So Ares was passable as a villain, but he didn't really have enough screen time to care about him either way, and the DCEU final battle is too repetitive.

Hes suppose to be the God war be intmadating but he looks like a mad scientist. That ruined the movie the final nail in the coffin.

What taylorfirst1 said. Ares himself wasn’t bad, but because of the twist he had little screen time, and the final battle was anticlimactic.
