So I haven't seen JL yet, but critics all seem to agree that Steppenwolf is a weak villain for the following reasons-
1) Poor physical screen presence due to being a CGI creation.
2) Generic super villain plot of wanting to destroy Earth for... Reasons
3) Generic personality with no nuance or depth
4) Controls an army of generic alien pawns
So will Thanos avoid being the same exact character with the same exact flaws??
Seems to me that he will have all four of those flaws in abundance. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see how he could be any better.
Especially in regard to problem #1. CGI villains always suck. Always. Doomsday, Azog, Borg, Ultron, Abomination. They all suck.
WHAT SAY YOU?

He won't be any better, probably worse considering a 15 movie buildup?

CGI villains are limited to the presence they can command but they also can botch human played ones too if they get the script wrong. Apocalypse was meant to be CGI before Oscar Isaac showed up. Now I didnt hate him as much as others, but I think in hindsight his appearance would have been much better and more intimidating being computer generated alongside the dialogue they already gave him. Thanos has to be CGI and he will be better than Steppenwolfe no doubt.

Loki who is seen as one of the better MCU villains. Thanos didn't come to earth, he sent Loki And Steppenwolf sounds as lame as The Other.

This scene from GOTG. He's cool and menacing. The voice performance by Josh Brolin fits like a glove. And it's all in 1 minute.

1) Poor physical screen presence due to being a CGI creation. Didn't hurt him in GOTG when he on-screen. He wants the Infinity Stones, not the destruction of Earth. We don't know what he's really like yet, he's a mystery. That was just the Chitauri, we'll be seeing more varied ones like the Black Order.

Hopefully they won't make him a jokey character, I'm sure they will have probably learned from their mistake from Ultron.
I know the Marvel villains haven't been very good up to yet but this is the main one that they've been building up to for years. He'll also have a two partner so he might not have to suffer from the same flaws.

Steppenwolf is my absolute favorite DC villain - said nobody - ever. The decision to use him as the forerunner to Darkseid was a colossal miscalculation. Can you imagine being a concept artist or VFX animator working on bringing a no-name brand, D level character to life? What a thrill! Can you blame them for how the final product turned out?
Amongst the pantheon of New Gods, he's a throwaway villain. What happened to Kalibak, Granny Goodness, or Desaad? Any one of them would have been a stronger choice. All three of them would have made history.
1). Thanos' screen presence looked good to me at Comic-Con. It looked really good. That said, he is a CGI character, and he does suffer from the limitations of being such. Being a CGI character doesn't automatically mean failure.
2). Thanos wants the UNIVERSE - the stakes literally can't get any higher.
3). That remains to be seen.
4). The Black Order is no generic army of pawns.
I don't even need to see Justice League to know it failed miserably in the one department that could have made it the greatest superhero team-up movie of all time - it failed to go FULL KIRBY (unlike Thor Ragnarok which is a love letter to Jack Kirby).

Yeah, but does the general population know who Thanos is? A lot of comic fans didn't even know who he was when he appeared in the post credit scene. And if they're basically both CGI alien humanoids then what's the difference really? He isn't The Joker, or Green Goblin or Red Skull. He's not even close to being a household name. And why does wanting the UNIVERSE make him any more interesting? It's still the same paper thin desire for ultimate power.

More CGI aliens that basically look like purple humans? Ah Jeez. Can't they just bring back Loki instead?

He has had much more build up and has a presence throughout multiple films even when he isn't even featured. Audiences didn't know how to react to Steppenwolf, they know how to react to Thanos by now.

I love stuff like that, but as for the character- We just know he's a big bad dude that wants to invade Earth.
