What Sci Fi Film do you really enjoy that you hardly ever hear talked about, flopped at the box office, or you feel is negatively regarded for no good reason? The kind of film you see and wonder how could this movie not be a big hit?
Mine is Gattaca (1997). I had heard the name of this one for years, but it never piqued my interest. Then I saw it was on Starz or Showtime several years ago, and happened to give it a shot.
I was astounded by this work! What a story of the human spirit. It may not be your everyday action film, but what a sleeper of a film. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to see a meaningful science fiction film that's not going to knock you over with action, but it will make you think.

"Unearthly Stranger": proof that good SF movies don't need massive budgets, elaborate SFX, monsters, gore or star names. The only things needed are a good story, a good script and as many British character actors (plus the occasional token American) as you can round up. See also "Invasion", "Village of the Damned" and "The Night Caller".

Yeah, that's one of my favorite science fiction films of all time. I own it on DVD.

Screamers (1995) was really good, for the technology & resources available at the time. And, it's probably the closest thing out there to a PKD short story, as most adaptations drifted pretty far from the source material in varying degrees.

My most under-rated are TV shows, Sanctuary, Survivors (British, 2008), and of course Babylon 5!

Of the movies mentioned here Gattaca is very solid imo. It's the first time I saw Jude Law. The rest of the cast was also good.
Other SF films; Scanners (Directed by Cronenberg) Altered States is mindbending (directed by Ken Russell)

"Enemy Mine" is a pretty decent and forgotten 80s sci-fi flick. I remember seeing it on its release in a huge and empty London cinema. I was so appalled by the lack of promotion for it that I phoned the distributor to ask why it had been dumped but they didn't really have an answer.

"The Quiet Earth" has been talked about recently here and at IMDb, but it's still one of the less well known sci-fi features of the last few decades.

The makers embroidered Barry Longyear's original story quite a lot but considering its troubled production history, it's amazing that it was any good at all.

'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within' -- a critical failure and a huge box office flop, but not only was it visual feast for the eyes and a technical tour-de-force, but it featured one of the most original stories in a sci-fi/speculative fiction movie in many a year.
