I found it offputting at first, but by the end I was really into it and moved. At face value, it's a lot like American Honey. But unlike that and similar movies, it doesn't have that exploitive "look how pathetic these people are" vibe. Like, the writer/director might have actually been these people and not just some cozy hipster in a Manhattan apartment going "I wonder what it's like being white trash in Florida."
Despite the characters around him, it's probably the most normal person I've ever seen Willem Dafoe play. He was really good.

Like, the writer/director might have actually been these people and not just some cozy hipster in a Manhattan apartment going "I wonder what it's like being white trash in Florida." Despite the characters around him, it's probably the most normal person I've ever seen Willem Dafoe play. He was really good. agreed. untill the very end i found it cringeworthy and slow. But the ending just showed me what the director was going for. the slow build up of intense emotions. I cant even COMPREHEND how Brooklyn Prince did her acting. At first I thought a lot of it must have been unscripted, with how genuine it felt, but then I found out she actually learned all the lines and it was all (or most) scripted very carefully. How ON EARTH do you get a child this small to act like this? the emotional intelligence and raw talent on the girl is insane. She didnt even use eye drops at the crying scene or anything. The other girl was also good. And the mum was a first timer too? From Instagram? Cray. This movie just has in shock. Also I thought the little girl must be a real brat in real life and that is why she is so good at it, but wrong again, she is actually quite the good girl for whom it was (per her words) really tough to be mean to the other people and she kept apologizing to the (adult) actresses later. The only thing I wondered was: if a person who doesnt like America, or has the slightest predisposition not to like America sees this, can you really blame them if they HATE the US, thinking everybody here is a selfish degenerate, once they've seen this? I know the movie doesnt say "everybody is like this". But the first world problems, shown in a place as nice as Florida, everybody has AC, put ICE in their drinks, seem to have enough money to put a roof over their head in a place with a nice person managing it and YET they all act like morons/trash/losers. Shows a modern society at its worst. But maybe that was the point? Its worth seeing. Just be mentally prepared to see a lot of ugliness (both physical and mental) and for the movie to be kinda slow. but its working up toward something. Trust it.

It's original and seems almost real, like some reality show.
