Not a genre I'm deeply familiar with, so I'm not even sure if all these qualify:
1. Talk Talk - The Spirit of Eden 2. XTC - Black Sea 3. Cocteau Twins - Treasure 4. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead 5. Echo & The Bunnymen - Heaven Up Here

I have no clue how to define post-punk. Looked at RYM - Talking Heads 77 isn't postpunk but several albums (not all) they did afterward are. The Clash Sandanista! is, other Clash isn't. Devo Are We Not Men is, Freedom of Choice isn't.
Talking Heads - Remain in Light Pere Ubu - Dub Housing The Slits - Cut Shoes for Industry - Talk Like a Whelk The Sisters of Mercy - Floodland

I have no clue how to define post-punk. It's pretty difficult to define...but easier than New Wave. Would The Specials or The Jam be post-punk?

Going by the Wikipedia list to determine who counts:
Adam & the Ants - Kings of the Wild Frontier Devo - Duty Now for the Future The Police - Ghost in the Machine REM - Automatic for the People XTC - Black Sea
. . . For the first three, I could easily pick other albums of theirs as my favorite. For REM and XTC, those are more firmly my favorite albums of theirs.
Difficult to leave out the Smiths, Squeeze, Talking Heads, U2 and some others.
If Wikipedia had listed Pretenders as post-punk, their debut would be one of my top 5.
"Post-punk" is a weird term to me because I never heard anyone say it prior to relatively recently on the Internet. I first heard the term online maybe 10 or 15 years ago. Everyone I knew called that music something else, often "new wave," sometimes "indie" etc.

I don't think Wikipedia had the Clash listed as pot-punk though. I was surprised they didn't list the B-52's as post-punk, either. The genre doesn't really make a lot of sense to me as a genre.

The Chameleons - "Script Of The Bridge" Echo and the Bunnymen - "Heaven Up Here" New Model Army - "No Rest For The Wicked" Gene Loves Jezebel - "Promise" Public Image Ltd. - "Metal Box" (though not necessarily a top favorite of mine, I do recognize that it is the grand daddy of all post-punk albums and is one of the top five greatest albums ever made.) For those of you really interested in post-punk, there is actually a very in depth book written about the subject. I've read it...it is a little too in depth. Having said that, it is the pretty definitive book on the subject and Reynolds does not leave any stone unturned. The UK version of the book is about 200 pages longer and has chapters on Goth and ska that aren't in the US version. And, yes, Reynolds does count The Specials and ska as post-punk. Of course it is. It sprang from the original punks.

XTC - Black Sea For REM and XTC, those are more firmly my favorite albums of theirs. YAY! Another big fan of that album! Though my favorite XTC is very close between that, English Settlement, Skylarking, and Oranges & Lemons. I could've easily picked any of them, but Black Sea is the closest to the typical "post-punk" sound (I think, anyway). AFAIK It's just a pretty big umbrella term to describe a lot artists/bands that emerged from the background of punk music while not playing typical punk music, and it did get split off into other more distinct genres like new wave, indie, etc.

Not an expert on this, however XTC, The Chamelons, Public Image Ltd, The Sound and I guess some of the early The Cure albums might fit right in. This album is often listed or mentioned as everything from Punk, cow-punk, alternative-rock, to post-punk and so my vote is probably waaaay off but I love The Mekons and specially their classic 1985 release: Fear and Whiskey

That is a great number too, no question about that. I agree but I think the brilliant Last Dance is their finest hour on Fear and Whiskey: "It will be aaaaalriiiiight!"
