I just finished the last few episodes of The Punisher Sunday night going into Monday morning and while I enjoyed it I didn't love it like I was hoping that I would. I'd give it a solid 6.5 or 7/10, 7/10 for IMDB scoring but mostly I'd give it a 6.5/10 on my own scale.
Some things that I really liked.
The cast. The cast in this show was just amazing to me. Jon Bernthal of course was great. Ben Barnes as also great as Billy Russo. Amber Rose Revah as Agent Madani was great as well and I wouldn't mind seeing her cross over into the other shows. Michael Nathanson as Sam Stein was a fun character in my mind added some comedy while he was on screen. Jason R Moore as Curtis I loved and want to see more of his character added a lot of heart to the series and you cared about him. Daniel Webber as Lewis Walcott I'll get more into that later. Finally Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Micro for me was the highlight of this serious. The actor and the character just really hit for me. He was funny and his season long story arch I was really rooting for him by just seeing how exactly his family was falling apart without him. I was legit shocked when he son hit his sister like "holy shit!" Like I wanted to hate that kid so much after that but then you get the scene with Frank the son and the knife and you just remember that this is a little kid who's dealing with some real shit and there is nobody around to help him with it. Micro just watching his family through these screens and having to watch the dysfunction that he's responsible for really connected with me and was sad. I was really rooting for them all to be ok and get back together.
The Lewis Walcott story arch was pretty powerful to me. The actor I felt really sold it how impacted he was by his PTSD. He felt a connectiong to Frank thinking that he was his hero and I really felt like Frank started to recognize that his actions are starting to impact others that may be interpreting them the wrong way when he's talking to the kid while trying to save Curtis. It really made Frank look like a hero when he wouldn't let his friend die alone not after how he felt he let him down before.
Frank's constant visions of his wife and family I really enjoyed how they incorporated those into this film and story. They didn't seem forced like I thought they might but they felt organic to me.
Liked this version of Billy Russo being a war friend of Frank Castle. From what I remember of the character in the comics he was just a common gangster. Glad they kept the Billy The Beaut nickname. I was looking forward to Frank scaring up his face somehow so I'm glad I wasn't disappointed there as I was scared they'd kill him not allowing him to come back as Jigsaw. The way he did it too was pretty damn brutal just sliding the side of his face down a broken mirror oh god I could almost feel that as he did it. Brutal.
Some things I didn't like so much.
How many times does Bernthal's Punisher say 'Yeah'? I mean I noticed it in Daredevil but him being just a side character in it didn't really bother me but damn he says it like 10 times an episode it can get distracting. it'd love to see somebody counting each and everyone of them just out of curiosity.
Like most people seem to say that the story seemed to drag on a bit like most of the Netflix Marvel shows go. While I loved that it was 13 episodes because I thought that they announced it would be 8 I'd say the happy medium here would of been a 10 episode season that could of trimmed some of the fat. While I enjoyed and thought the Lewis arch was powerful I also felt like they were building him up to be the main villain for season 2 which I kind of wish they would of done now. But I can't complain too much there because I liked how they pulled it off here.
The Frank will he won't he kiss Micro's wife/Karen I just didn't want any of it. I personally don't want Frank Castle starting to have feelings for somebody not his wife because in my mind it hurts his motivation for wanting to kill all these people. I don't really want to see Frank really move on into a relationship. While I liked the interaction with Micro and Frank after his wife kissed him with the naked dancing and the penis size I found it to be funny but I didn't feel like that needed to happen. I understood it from the presumed widow's point of view but I felt disappointed in Frank that he let it happen. Then the scene with him and Karen in the elevator I got this feeling like they were going to kiss and I was rooting for them not to. I like Frank being protective of her because she tried to help him when nobody else really would but I'm not interested in that being anything further than that.
Anyways looking forward to a Season 2. The tease at the end of Jigsaw got me excited plus we know that the Gnucci family exist so can we see Ma Gnucci down the line? I sure hope so.
