I do like the omega man, but much like the others never quite captures the novel.

I'm not sure. There's quite a bit of inner reflection that just doesn't translate well to film. I thought the first half of I Am Legend was close, but once the woman and child came into the mix it went down a different path. And the best part about the book is the realization at the end that he's the monster, and acceptance of his lack of a place in the new world. So without capturing that any adaptation will fall short.

Agreed. I love the Will Smith flick up until the other people show up, it's all downhill from there. And the ending of the book is vital to the entire story arc. The problem is marketing the movie as an action flick sets certain expectations for the general audience. They want to see the hero save the day, not recognize that he's become the monster and accept his fate. The story could absolutely work as a low budget horror flick if they stuck to the original story.

The Last Man on Earth is very close, all it needed was a couple of changes near the end and a Vincent Price voice over.

I love The Omega Man (Heston) and The Last Man on Earth (Price). Didn't really care for The Omega Man (Smith). For some reason, after watching the first two, I have never felt any interest in reading the novel.
