Currently reading LOTR for the 3rd time, after re-reading The Hobbit and figured after that I might finally take a crack at the wider mythos. But what would you say is the best order to read these in?
My understanding is Children of Hurin and Beren and Luthien are expansions of stories already in the Silmarillion. So would it be better to read them first so as to avoid spoilers of sorts? Or does it not really matter? And does it matter where I fit Unfinished Tales in?
I imagine the 12 book History of Middle Earth is probably best saved to last? Is it worth bothering with at all?
Thanks.

Silmarillion and then Unfinished Tales. The expanded Children of Hurin and Beren & Luthien as needed.
The 12-vol series has many variations of the same texts, often revised over the years. But much fascinating details on language, cosmology, etc.
Note that for Tolkien it was always a work in progress. He never really finished the story.

If you like audiobooks, Martin Shaw's reading of The Silmarillion is very good.
As is Rob Inglis with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
All unabridged.

Richard Armitage could have been Turin, not Thorin.
