I was somewhat disappointed with this effort, given the director and budget. It feels like a much lower budget movie. Also, the camp was half-hearted - the main character was just annoying. Either go full way with it (with a better actor?), or do a straight, serious approach (which might have worked better). But it did a fairly good job of an atmosphere of grunge and dread.

Agreed that the annoying protagonist ruined much of it. Also, you'd think that after more than a decade in development hell they would have had enough time to come up with a script that's more than just one guy running around and encountering different characters/monsters/clues about what it's all about. Feels very video game-ish to structure a story that way. Nice visual designs though, they got much of that Lovecraft feel right. Very few Lovecraft adaptations manage to capture any of the atmosphere that his writing have, and for that reason I'm quite forgiving. It's still not a good movie, though. 5/10

I think it's pretty good, the lead notwithstanding. Effectively nightmarish, with solid atmosphere (lots of rain in this flick!).

I'll echo the original sentiments. The main character and the actor playing him are both really unlikeable and annoying, and it does look really cheap in spots. Particularly there was some really shoddy and cheap looking CGI on stuff that easily could have been done practically on a reasonable budget. Some of those effects really ruined things for me.
The thing about the movie that is so frustrating is that so much of it is entertaining and effective. It's a great set up. There are some good reveals. The plot unfolds in an appropriately dreadful way. There are some impressive sets and locations. It's nicely shot. And yet... there are just too many problems to hold the thing together, and it never delivers on it's potential. It's a shame, because it's almost good. Maybe my expectations were too high.

Fantastic Factory productions always had rather poor CGI. Anyone else here stupid enough to sit through FF's second-to-last production, The Nun (2005)? I hope not. It's a showcase of poor CGI and nothing else. Faust had really ropey effects too. It's a shame that a company set up to produce quality genre films with decent budgets and a lot of artistic freedom ended up producing mostly very poor films. Dagon at least had some nice things, most of them didn't.

Some faults aside, the atmosphere is laid on thick and visuals are suitably creepy. I kinda like it, mainly for its feverish abandonment.
