I saw Iron Man 1 way after Avengers and I didnt see the aftercredit scenes until later even. Only when I started to get really into the MCU (around Winter Soldier or maybe even Guardians) I started to read about the MCU and found out there were creditscenes.
Yep Newb spotted. But hey, you can stick me where the sun dont shine.

I'm pretty sure they never said the word "Avengers" in that scene. It was just written on the file that Fury hands to Stark. Either way I was incredibly pumped.
Iron Man was my favorite superhero as a kid (decades before the MCU was born) and the Avengers were my favorite team. I was never a big comic book collector but most of the ones I did have were Iron Man and Avengers comics.
Realizing that there would be an Avengers movie was extremely exciting.
It was the same feeling I got in the theater in 1979 when at the end of Star Trek The Motion Picture they put up the title of the next movie;
Star Trek II; The Wrath of Khan.

That's a pretty cool little teaser. Was Kahn fairly well-known by the general audiences at that time? I know he was only a one-shot villain on the show.

Yup, it was an early example of a credits scene. I think it was something like "end of the movie and then the words the crew of the Enterprise will return in.... Star trek II The Wrath of Khan. Khan was of course very well known to us Star Trek fans who had grown up watching the show in syndicated reruns everyday of our lives. So when that appeared on screen, the audience in the theater completely erupted!
