I have to say that the Russo brothers have basically been crowned as kings of the MCU by not only killing it with TWS and CW, but being given the chairs for the ultimate two films in the entire franchise.
But James Gunn is right there right? He's been granted a massive leadership roll in crafting the future, has two huge hits of his own, and is consulting with the Russos on the Infinity films.
What about Taika now? How important is he after his breakout success with Thor? I think he's earned a ton of credibility and might have some stronger influence going forward.
What about Peyton Reed? He got to direct his own sequel and did a damn nice job the first time out with a hard to sell character so they clearly like him. I haven't heard much more though so I think he's just hanging out with the Ant Man franchise and that's pretty much it.
Is Ryan Coogler stepping up? By all accounts they seem pleased with Black Panther and I have to assume he'll get that sequel if he wants it. More importantly, Panther seems to be a next generation leader of the team, so it's possible if Coogler is highly successful he may have a heavy hand in any future Avenger films.
How about John Favreau? He had a big hand early on, is still around in some capacity, and I think would have some influence on projects he's involved with. Does he do more than I'm giving him credit for?
I really don't know about John Watts or Scott Derrickson, who did Homecoming and Dr. Strange respectively. They were more than pleased with both, especially Strange so Derrickson might be around for awhile, and like Coogler, he's in charge of basically a franchise leading character after phase 3, so he might be competing to get a future Avengers film as well.
And of course we've yet to see anything from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck on Captain Marvel.
But what are you thoughts of the current stable of directors?
