However, in another part of the Bible, in Matthew 15: 3-4, Jesus supports God's commandment to put people to death if they curse their father and mother.
That's not what's going on there. Jesus refers to that example as one that people don't follow, yet like to claim that they are the tradition-honoring ones. His point was to show that sometimes, you move away from certain practices, including Jesus and his disciples on some matters, such as the washing of the hands in that instance. I strongly don't think that Jesus would support capital punishment.

An argument could be made either way. In one part of the Bible Jesus saves a woman from getting stoned to death, like the law at the time said to do, when he made the statement, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."
However, in another part of the Bible, in Matthew 15: 3-4, Jesus supports God's commandment to put people to death if they curse their father and mother.
It's not entirely clear how he feels about capital punishment IMO.
What are your thoughts? Do you think Jesus would support capital punishment? In my long experience with these debates I've found that many people confuse capital punishment and self defense. They are afraid that if they forbid capital punishment then they won't be able to defend themselves. They don't really believe it is necessary to kill some guy who's locked up in a cage so much as they are afraid they won't be able to kill him if he escapes, obtains a weapon, and becomes a real threat. The Bible can be very vague about punishments and the times to administer them.

I don't believe Jesus would support capital punishment. I think it goes against what he taught about love, forgiveness, grace, and mercy.

I'm having trouble with the concept that love, forgiveness, grace, and mercy would make any difference to someone like Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer... www.biography.com/people/gary-ridgway-10073409Someone who is so obviously "not right": What would Jesus do?

From a political or secular standpoint, he would be indifferent since politics was not his interest.
From a theocratic or prophetic standpoint, he's going to kill a lot of people.

I'm sorry didn't Jesus accept his father's capital punishment of being killed to wash away people's sin? It wasn't capital punishment in the death sentence sense considering he was resurrected. Further, his father didn't set the sentence.

Jesus didn't do anything wrong nor did God accuse him of any wrong.

So long as it is with a sword, I think he'd be cool with it.
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send [or bring] peace, but a sword." - Matthew 10:34
"...if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one." - Luke 22:36

His dad sure has no problem with it, why would he?
Once you've survived crucifixion I imagine capital punishment doesn't seem like such a big deal.

Jesus didn't do anything wrong nor did God accuse him of any wrong. 1 - Wasn't it his dad that set the punishment? 2- Wasn't Jesus fine with paying the price for sin? So Death for Sin would seem perfectly logical to them.
