Heh. Interesting concept.
Howard Hawks
*Only Angels Have Wings
*Bringing up Baby
*Red River
*Rio Bravo
*The Big Sleep
Ernst Lubitsch
*Trouble in Paradise
*Heaven Can Wait
*The Shop Around the Corner
*To Be or Not to Be
*Design for Living
John Ford
*Fort Apache
*The Quiet Man
*Stagecoach
*The Searchers
*The Man who Shot Liberty Valance
Alfred Hitchcock
*Shadow of a Doubt
*Rear Window
*Strangers on a Train
*North by Northwest
*Young and Innocent (Lifeboat could have easily gone in this spot, but I really wanted to put a picture from his British period on here)
Billy Wilder
*Sunset Boulevard
*Double Indemnity
*Five Graves to Cairo
*Some Like It Hot
*The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
N.B.: These are personal favorites, not attempts at objective "bests." If they were, then Five Graves to Cairo or Young and Innocent might not have made it on their respective lists; Vertigo would have definitely been on my Hitchcock list.
Looking over them, I'm a bit disappointed at whom I didn't pick: any non-Anglophone directors (well, excepting Germans Lubitsch and Wilder, but the films I included were Hollywood), for example, including long-time favorites like Renoir, Ophüls, Cocteau, or even Murnau; or a Wunderkind like Welles; or the great comics, Chaplin and Keaton. I would have loved to have put on some more--Michael Curtiz, Frank Capra, Raoul Walsh, James Whale, all the way to such modern masters as Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, or many others--but, ah well, we're limited by five, and so be it.
