I was in a local Barnes & Noble yesterday (Milwaukee area) and happened to be in their movie/music department, and was shocked at how little (relatively speaking) 'holiday' stock they had back there......not that the shelves/racks were empty, but in holiday seasons past, I distinctly remember seeing those departments literally bulging with inventory, including many, many 'deluxe' cd and/or dvd box sets, and other higher ticket items that they didn't normally have on-hand. In other words, tons of merchandise that specifically was brought in, in anticipation of the higher holiday traffic that would no doubt be in the store. But yesterday, I saw almost NONE of that......in fact, if I didn't know what time of year it actually was, it could just as easily have been another day in a Barnes & Noble movie/music department in the middle of summer (or spring, or fall, etc.), based on what I saw. Which leads me to wonder, is this a deliberate choice by the company's management, figuring if they don't bring in a ton of merchandise that never ends up selling, that means much less inventory that might eventually have to be marked-down to get sold (even though this flies directly in the face of the general retail 'mantra' that you've not only got to have the inventory, but have to have it out on display in order to sell it)? Just curious if anyone else who has been in their local B&N bookstore very recently happened to notice the same thing in that department, or if, for whatever reason, the store I was in was simply lacking in excess inventory? Anyone?

I think the last time I was in a bookstore was a year ago--early December, 2016. And before that, it might have been more than a year.
I do the vast majority of my reading on my kindle. I do occasionally still buy "physical" books, but not that often, and I always buy them from Amazon. The last time I regularly bought books from a bookstore was probably 2002 or so.

It would be worrying if Barnes and Noble's physical stores went out of business....and I say that as someone who never buys anything at a physical Barnes and Noble.

There is a large Barnes and Noble in downtown Chicago, and they do not even carry any DVD/CD's...

i wouldn't be surprised if they are not stocking things due to a dwindling market. many people are now downloading things onto ipads/whatnot [have never understood this] and leaving dvd's and even bluray in its dust.
the sad thing about streaming and things like that... if you are in an area where wifi is sketchy at best, [and with young children] you can't rely on these things. i need a dvd disc and my little player to KNOW something will work.

Barnes & Noble announced recently that they're downsizing their stores--getting rid of a lot of the accessories that fill out their stores--the large selection of blank journals, the bookends, etc. I'm sure the dwindling DVD and CD market is reflected in the store's decision to do this as well.

Are you trying to slip a little "War On Christmas" nonsense by us?

Over the last few years, Barnes & Noble stores have been disappearing, here. The two that were in San Francisco closed, as did the one in the nearest suburb. Now, it's rather a trek to get to one. Usually, I only bother if I have something else to do in that town/area.
I used to love to go for the great buys that they had in movies/music, and I know what you mean about the holiday season. I finally decided that the sheer number of DVDs that I had was becoming overwhelming, so I rent online, or order from Netflix. I have friends who are experiencing the same thing. It's possible that the store is seeing a drop-off in purchases, and is stocking accordingly.
Your post makes me feel (a little) nostalgic for B&N, and I might make a journey to one, this weekend.
