So the sequel trilogy is the three-part finale of the original characters rather than also a launching pad for the new characters?
Bummer.

You're completely right.
People are going to the movies for the original trilogy characters and actors.
That's why 7 made as much or more money in North America alone than the entire prequel trilogy.
Who in the completely new and unrelated trilogy will people be going to the movies for?

Everybody was excited about the return of the Trio and other originals. Everybody wanted to see Luke, Leia and Han again and how they compared to the EU and all that. Remember how excited you were when you heard Luke's voiceover and saw him touching R2D2? Remember how we exploded when Han Solo and Chewbacca showed up in the trailer?
What do we care for the likes of Rey, Finn, Poe, and BB8? They're not the reason we came to watch it. And they get in the way of the spotlight of the Trio. Because of this reckless waste of the Trio, now we"ll never get to see them on screen together again. All just to "pass the torch" to actors and legacy characters who don't have the sheer history with Star Wars and don't deserve it.

So the sequel trilogy is the three-part finale of the original characters rather than also a launching pad for the new characters? No. This is what Kathleen Kennedy said just a few weeks ago:

So we'll be seeing new Star Wars movies beyond 9 with Rey, Finn, Poe, and BB-8, as well as new Star Wars movies with completely new characters?
Or will Rey, Finn, Poe, and BB-8 be in Rian Johnson's new Star Wars trilogy?

Depends on how Episode IX does, Kennedy wants to continue with these characters, but if Mickey is unhappy with box office big changes could be in store.
Daisy could be done, she can't take criticism from aggressive fans, but a big paycheck may make up for it.

People are going to the movies for the original trilogy characters and actors. That's why 7 made as much or more money in North America alone than the entire prequel trilogy. TFA is on 11, Phantom Menace is at 18 of highest US domestic grosses adjusted for ticket price inflation, all the PT are top 50/100. So that's evidently an absurd urban myth. But it's of course true that the TFA hype was mostly about meeting old friends (and ships) and seeing how the have fared; I jumped on the bandwagon and it was one of the biggest cinematic disappointments of my life.
