Maybe about 60 years ago, from a comic book.

Maybe about 60 years ago, from a comic book. What? I'm guessing something like a toy submarine that used baking soda to power it across the bathtub

When I was a kid, quite a few times. It would be an item that was on sale, so my parents would order and pay for it.
I get why they save the best for last. It's a marketing ploy. Once you reach the end of the magazine, they try one last thing in order to receive your business. Pretty smart.
I still flip through catalogs if I receive them in the mail, but hardly ever order anything from them. I do most of my shopping off of Amazon. At least you can save on shipping and tax depending on how much you spend.

teleadm I had sea monkeys but not from a magazine ad. My mom found them in some store. The kit came with a little magnifying glass so you could see the darn things. I bet that the ones that I had were not this "expensive" The science part of it :

them1ghtyhumph I got one of those baking soda submarines. I think it was a dime or a quarter. It was about 2" long at most. There was also a skin diver with the same means of operation but he came free in some box of cereal or other. This seems to be a re-issue of it.
