The Femme Fatale a mysterious woman, an icon of glamour & seduction, whose charms ensnare her ill-fated lovers, leading them astray into compromising moral and ethical dilemmas , and futher into deadly situations. Typically villainous and morally ambiguous her mysterious air generates feelings of apprehension. One of her common traits includes promiscuity and the rejection of motherhood, denying him his immortality and his posterity, leads to the ultimate destruction of the male.
From ancient times the seductive femme fatale has featured in popular writing and artwork. Her bewittching ability to entrance and hypnotise a victim was seen in the earliest stories as being literally a supernatural trait. Having evolved in modern literature and art , the femme fatale however is still often described as having a power akin to an enchantress a seductress a vamp. In middle of the 19th century she flourished, becoming a main character in many notable literary works and a dramatic inspiration for visual artists of the times. At the turn of the century the femme fatale was a prominent figure in dramatic opera and theatre productions world wide.
In classic film, the silent years for the Western film-audience perspective showed the femme fatale mostly appearing foreign, usually Eastern European, Eurasian or of Asian ancestry, these early film fatale protagonists were a radical shift in characterization from the pure wholesomeness of , Mary Pickford for example.
The early films excited & engaged audiences with their dark melodramatic appeal, they were an inspiration to later filmmakers and actresses, who broadened the scope and popularity of the crime/melodrama film genre with a focus on the intriguing & complex character, the Femme Fatale.
