TLJ: the characters
1. Luke:The poor characterization of Luke - a grumpy hermit Jedi who preaches about his failure until the end of the movie. Then he turned himself into a Force hologram distraction and expired. All through the movie I kept expecting Luke to break out a whiskey jug and start walking around with it.
2. Yoda: Showed up in a cameo in a playfully impish mood (which seemed out-of-character given the circumstances) to co-sign on Luke destroying the last of the Jedi teachings in writing. Why? Because in case you didn't see TFA (or in case you just love being reminded of it), Rey is a MarySue Force user who doesn't need any training.
3. Leia: Out of the OT characters, she seemed to be written the best and honored her "heritage". The flying through space with the Force scene stretched the Force lore a little, though.
4. Snoke: We finally get to see Snoke in person. He is a compelling character with charismatic evil. This character could've been developed into one the best bad guys in SW based off of what he showed himself to be in TLJ. Nope! He gets whacked off in a rather insignificant manner so Kylo and Rey can start their love connection lightsaber team up. Then show off their connection and skills slaughtering Snoke's throne room guards. Snoke was just a placeholder to give Kylo fake character development in the sense that he advances to the new Supreme Leader. We will never know who the awesomely powerful Snoke was or how he came to be such a powerful Darkside master. Or how he seems to know everything when he was nowhere around in the events of episodes 1 through 6.
5. Ackbar: Another Abrams-style killing off an icon for story thrills! HE'S ACKBAR! AND HE DOESN'T SENSE A TRAP COMING THAT'S GOING TO GET EVERYONE KILLED!?!
6. Kylo: He's still whiny Darkside Anakin on steroids in a Vader suit. But halfway through the film Snoke hurts Kylo's feelings about his admiration for Vader. And Kylo ditches his helmet and his admiration. The rest of his character development is about his Force orgasm love connection that he has with Rey. Which constantly came through Force visions of each other throughout the film.
7. Poe: IMO he was a better character with more development in TLJ.
8. Rey: She continues the MarySue theme by training herself in the Force after she meets Luke. Except for one lesson that Luke gives her in meditation, which is sprinkled with Luke's act of "get off my lawn guy" who's going to get his drunk on after this. Her character becomes more well-rounded after that. But also spends a lot of time with her Force love connection visions she shares with Kylo. And the mystery of Rey's parents turned out to be more of Abrams silly mystery box.
9. Finn: He abandoned some of his Jar Jar act that was in TFA. His side plot adventure with Rose had highs and lows, good spots and bad spots. And he was a little more believable in his action hero moments.
10. Rose: She had a few SJW moments. But aside from that she was an inspired and likable character who forms a connection with Finn. But nothing epic.
11. BB8: Droid please! BB8 was like super R2D2 in this movie. (He pilots one of those 2 legged tanks, among other things). But still doesn't equal R2D2 in personality. Mostly the same character he was in TFA.
12. R2D2: Just makes a cameo with Luke. There was fan service nostalgia involved. But the bonding between him and Luke had a genuine OT feel to it.
13. C3PO: He had more screen time and better dialogue than he did in TFA. But was his characterization equal to episodes 1, 2, and 4 through 6? I don't know.
14. Hux: He was the yawn inspiring yes-man that he was in TFA.
15. The Force: It continued it's progression away from the more confined (or refined) definition of the first 6 SW movies into a clone of Disney magic. Now the Force makes constant love connection visions between Rey and Kylo. Instantaneously and effortlessly. And both Rey and Kylo's story arc provided more "evidence" that training isn't necessary anymore.
