One thing I've noticed is that TLJ is very controversial. Astute observation, I know. But I think I might know why.
I was at a Christmas party with my extended family last night and my second cousin had already seen the movie, as had my first cousin. Us three were the only ones who had seen it of about 50 people total at the party, so we had to be very hush-hush about it, but I came to a realization.
My first cousin loved it. He thought it was one of the best Star Wars movies ever made and rated it a solid 9.5/10. Now, he is a huge Star Wars fan, but not a huge fan of Luke. It's not that he dislikes him, but he would rather see other characters take the lead.
My second cousin is a different story. He hated the movie even more than most; giving it a "generous" 3/10. He, on the other hand, is a massive fan of Luke. Luke is easily his biggest hero when it comes to fictional characters. This movie disgusted him.
I too love Luke. He's not my favorite character, but he was the main draw for me. His portrayal broke this movie for me. He didn't feel like Luke. It was all off. It sunk the movie in my mind. I think this is how it is for most people that didn't like it.
Diehard Star Wars fans still like this movie, but most diehard Luke fans don't. That's my observation so far. I'd like to hear from you guys about it as well. If you liked it, just ask yourself if Luke was the main draw for you or not. The same thing for if you didn't like it. I'm not claiming to be right, I'm just genuinely curious about this. I think Luke might be the "key" to liking or disliking this new movie.

I loved it and Luke has always been my favorites Star Wars character until Kylo Ren. Jesus. This is one of the most humiliating things I've ever read. Is the Russian government, like, blackmailing you into making these gushy shill posts?

I loved it and Luke has always been my favorites Star Wars character until Kylo Ren. I too love Luke, and i Think the desconstruction of the character was perfect. I love that he is not the all mighty Jedi everybody thinks he is, but i love the way the legend of Luke will live on forever, that last scene made sure of it. Also Kylo Ren, finnaly a bad guy that is not entirely sure what he wants. He is conflicted, feels guilt, but the lust for power takes him places we don't generally see in a villain. The ultimate bad guy is no more. What they are doing with him is what they did with vader in ROTJ in a few minutes, but here we see first hand the conflict that vader felt in those last minutes. a heavily flawed character thus an insteresting character.

I never cared for Luke in the OT, but this was not the Luke from the OT. Love him or not (I do not), people are upset because there is no remnant of the OT Luke in this Disney character. Pushing boundaries and evolving the character would have been fine, but there needed to be at least enough OT Luke to make the character legitimate. The way he died was pure garbage.
Luke's character development in this movie, however, is like the 10th thing on a list of 30 that I didn't like. There are bigger and very numerous reasons to hate this film.
