Based on an autobiography of about 10 years earlier, this documentary tells the story of how Arthur Gelien became the manufactured movie star Tab Hunter, how he was successful, how he became the dreamboat of American women, and how he managed to live this role as a closeted gay man. Tab, in a series of interviews with the film makers, narrates his own story as we see many great clips from his films and contemporary news coverage. There are the requisite Talking Heads as well. It is a fascinating life that, ultimately, ends happily. Hunter, about 83 years old when the interviews were held, is still fit and looking 15 to 20 years younger than his age. He spends his time with his horses (a lifelong interest) and his partner. He finally says of himself: “I loved [being a star], but I love where I am now in my life and I am happy to be forgotten.”
