About a year or two back I got around to watching the first two seasons of the cult Canadian-made vampire/crime TV show “Forever Knight”.
I found it strangely transfixing despite the slow pacing and standard mechanics of the stories. From the first entry, you're thrown right into Knight's world. A likable Geraint Wyn Davies in the lead role as Nicholas Knight a forsaken centuries old vampire looking for redemption, who spends his nights as a homicide detective in present-day Toronto. We gradually learn more about him and of course his past through constant flashbacks. Characters come and go, and each episode’s storyline in some shape, forms some sort of link with his character’s affliction and his attempt to break away from what holds him. This is what makes the show for me. Knight's gradual battle with his demons. That's where I found season 2 to really open up. Thanks to potent writing and performances.
The support characters have strong presences, like John Kapelos as Knight’s obnoxious detective partner (where the show’s fitting humour mainly eventuates from) and then there’s an imposing Nigel Bennett as Knight’s Vampire master who will do anything to see that Knight doesn’t regain his human form. Helping Knight’s character with his thirsty temptations is Catherine Disher as Dr. Natalie Lambert a police forensic scientist searching for a cure. Also Deborah Duchene is beautifully striking as a fellow vampire / friend of Knight. It’s virtually on the cheap and the budget shows, but for some reason its bareness only enhances its stylish atmospherics. Where it comes across dark, brooding and melancholy.
I've got the third season. I watched the first episode and nothing beyond that. I noticed there were some character changes from season 2 to 3. How is the third season?

Oh absolutely I remember this. I'll watch pretty much anything vampire related, so this made perfect sense to me. I agree that while they definitely shot this on the low, it made up for it with some interesting story lines and character development. I quite enjoyed it. I'm surprised I haven't seen it resurface lately. Unless it has, and I just haven't seen it.

I used to watch reruns at night (it might've been at 10pm). A good time to watch a vampire drama. I remember enjoying it, not sure if I would now, but I do acknowledge its influence on one of my favorite shows of all time: Angel.
