When do you think Star Wars peaked in popularity?
I'd say it's a three way tie between 1999, 2005 and now here in the 2010's with Disney making all these new movies that has made Star Wars more mainstream than ever before. Everyone has some sort of interest in Star Wars now whether it be the Originals, the Prequels or the new movies. I'll give my reasons why 1999 and 2005 could also count as the peak for the franchise:
1999 - A new Star Wars film came out for the first time in 16 years and the anticipation for it was off the charts! Merchandise for the film and the OT was everywhere that year and we even got see interviews famous celebrities speaking about their thoughts on Episode I.
2005 - It was the year Episode III came out and was not only the film that would serve as the complete conclusion to the Prequels and finally tell us how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, but it was marketed as the last Star Wars film to ever to be released and everyone thought at the time it was going to be the last Star Wars film ever! Not to mention the fact that everyone loved it the best of the Prequels and it did an excellent job of connecting the Prequels and the Originals together.

When The Force Awakens grossed two billion dollars worldwide. I'd actually agree with that. The only way Disney gets the magic back is if they stop releasing them once a year.

If you mean popularity as in people talking favorably about it-then 1997 probably. Once TPM came out it started to slide.

In 1980 with the Empire Strikes Back as ONLY it and Star Wars (1977) were and ARE the only GREAT ONES (Classics).

I am far from a expert on these movies but i know when it comes to all-time movie related stuff they are up there (like when you look at $$$ and the like) with many people but i would assume their glory days were clearly the ones from the late 1970's and early 1980's even though i am sure because of the fans of those that the newer movies are popular enough to.
but strictly in terms of when they peaked in popularity... I don't have a clue. have they even really dropped off amongst the fans of the series? ; I would imagine not.
p.s. personally... I could not finish the first movie due to boredom. so i never bothered with the rest of the series. it seems they are just not my thing.

For those of us who saw the original films when they premiered (especially if kids) the impact was pretty big-(keep in mind that none of the imitators could replicate the FX of the films)-and for years after, Lucas would show up on tv here and there and discuss his plans for the later movies (I think Siskel and Ebert interviewed him around 1990).
Star Wars fandom declined by the end of the 80s, and then started up again with the novels in the 90s-and the SE releases. There was no ill will towards it--until the first prequel. And the backlash was harsh and immediate.
Lucas was pretty arrogant sounding before TPM came out and then after the backlash he was saying the films were always meant for kids and the people complaining didn't understand that.

Hard to gauge the pre-internet days but I know within my circle of friends growing up Star Wars was huge until TPM came out. We were all sitting around a table at Denny's after that premiere just wondering what the heck had just happened. It all went downhill from there.
I have to admit though that while I enjoyed Luke's storyline in ROTJ and the climatic battle with the Emperor and Darth Vader, it was a cash grab for toy merchandise overall. You had all the crazy creatures in Jabba's lair and then the Ewoks. Kenner toys and Lucas made a fortune.

The first movie created a giant wave of popularity that virtually no one saw coming. This wave of popularity has never subsided. Despite people complaining about EVERY subsequent movie the popularity of the franchise has never gone down.
Every movie is a guaranteed monster hit and the merchandise is off the charts.

During my lifetime, definitely Episode III. Maybe Episode I rivaled or beat it but I was a bit too young to remember. I remember 2005 clearly though. Everyone was exited for the film. I saw it three times in cinemas. Merchandise and toys were everywhere. It was a huge event.
Now these new ones. Maybe they make a crapload of money. Maybe even more than the previous films. But they don't generate anywhere near as much true excitement as the prequels did, especially Episode III. Not by a long shot. They just aren't big event movies any more.

Whenever viewership and merchandise sales peaked. I imagine that was with the first one.
Not being the peak is not a big deal as long as popularity remains.
It certainly didn;t peak with the prequels lol.

I wasn't around when the original trilogy was released so I can't really answer it but its popularity the last years is extremely big. Star Wars movies are the movies people keep talking about. Everyone around me is talking about TLJ and probably will for quite a while and then people will start talking about the next one. The only current franchise with a similar popularity is the MCU, but I feel that most people stop talking about it soon after a movies' release whereas people keep talking about Star Wars all year. And there's something about SW that makes it feel iconic, Star Wars releases are special 'events' which I can't say about any other current movie franchise.
