The primary complaint about Kylo Ren was that he was too weak to be a credible villain especially after being defeated by Rey at the end of TFA? How do you feel about any change in his character's villainous attributes after the events of TLJ? Feel free to expand on this!

It's getting better.
Kylo and his abysmal, incoherent writing were one of the main reasons that made TFA unwatchable for me. Especially his absurd praying to Vader scene, his juvenile hissy fits, his buffoonish incometence as commander, his laughable "pouty face" reveal, him losing to Rey several times, or his lack of motivational writing to go super-bad and kill Han are lowpoints in character writing for me: thus EmoRen.
TLJ was a significant improvement (I have just seen it once though): Ren's hissy fit (mask) was warranted as character development; tough I still do not understand his motivational background or what his conflicts are (if tehre are any). It's not Shakespeare but this Kylo version did at least not make me cringe and question if I am still a SW fan.

I really understand what drove him to his new heights, but I'm still left with my own theories on what got him there in the first place. The shred of hope that I have that it will be one of the things revealed later is that Rey point blank asked him and he evaded answering it, so it wasn't like this is something the storyteller ignored. I just hope JJ doesn't drop it. I really enjoyed that Johnson took everyone's criticisms of Kylo and had Snoke bitch slap Kylo with them in the film, and that humiliation refueled his hate, fueling his darkness with no need for that mask anymore to hide behind.

Yes, I liked too that Snoke basically mocked him like the online community did (beaten by a girl who never held a saber, ridiculous mask etc). I think this was the right move.
Also on a similar note, I liked that they revised the Leia-Hugged-First fiasko, by having Leia meet Chewie and Rey at the end, but Leia only hugs Chewie and quasi ignores Rey. De-Sue-ification as it should be done to keep characters and their relationships credible.

How do you feel about any change in his character's villainous attributes after the events of TLJ? Feel free to expand on this! Hmmmm... I have to give you credit @homergreg . Always the eternal optimist, and always giving us something to think about. Maybe I will even warm up to TLJ a little more via your threads. But about Kylo: in thinking about this there are so many pluses and minuses that I feel like a pinball. (-) Kylo throwing a tantrum because Snoke mocked his emulating Vader. It was his typical bratty behavior. But I suppose it did help advance his character development. He decided to abandon Vader and "become himself". But more on the Vader emulating later. (+) Kylo's conversations with Rey: In those conversations he seems to confront who he really is on an honest and more mature level. And he wants to explore a relationship with Rey, even though his pride was hurt over Snoke rubbing his face in his failure against Rey. (+) After killing Snoke (more on that later), and teaming up with Rey to kill Snoke's bodyguards, Kylo contemplates being a leader and his vision of ruling the galaxy. He even expresses sympathy for Rey's plight and pleads for Rey to join him. It may have been a bit of a ripoff from the end of ROTS with Anakin and Padmé ("We can rule the galaxy together and make things be the way we always wanted them to be!"), but it probably was some of Kylo's strongest character development. (-) Kylo's confrontation with Luke: Here Kylo reverts back to being the character plagued with weaknesses in TFA. He uses the Force to slam Hux around the cabin of a walker tank every time Hux says something he doesn't like. And he is in temper tantrum mode during his entire confrontation with Luke. A character easily goaded into behavior that can be manipulated to the advantage of his opponent; as Luke demonstrated throughout their confrontation. And it reinforced (once again) that Kylo is nowhere close to being on Darth Vader's level. (+/-) Now, for the whole Reylo thing! The thinly guised romantic tension served to advance the character development of both of them throughout the movie. So that was a plus. However it seemed to overwhelm the overall storyline; almost as if on purpose. Everytime Rian Johnson opened one of JJ Abrams empty mystery boxes, Reylo was there to distract us from being deflated. Kylo smashes his Vader helmet and abandons emulating Vader. This reveals that his praying to Vader and the question of what side of the Force was the Anakin/Vader Force ghost on was an empty box - shortly thereafter along comes Reylo. Snoke is killed in the throne room and his character development, the mystery of who he was, and his significance of engineering the First Order suddenly dead end without any answers. Another empty box opened - and immediately after that comes Reylo in a lightsaber team up. Rey's parents are revealed to be nobodies. Despite so much storyline significance being placed on it in TFA! And some of it carried over into TLJ. That empty mystery box was opened right in the middle of Reylo. So obviously I count that element as a minus. But adding it up overall I say Kylo was a slightly stronger character in TLJ.

How do you feel about any change in his character's villainous attributes after the events of TLJ? Feel free to expand on this! Kylo owes his lightsaber skills to Mary Poppins Leia aka Carrie Poppins. It was Carrie Poppins who retrieved Luke's lightsaber from Cloud City. It was Carrie Poppins who flew through space by her invisible Force umbrella power and delivered Luke's lightsaber to Ben Solo (Kylo) for his training at Luke's Jedi academy. It was Carrie Poppins who who stole Luke's lightsaber from Kylo as punishment for destroying Luke's Jedi academy and flew through space with Force umbrella to deliver it to Maz's castle. It was Carrie Poppins who later flew around to different planets to find lightsaber parts for Kylo's red lightsaber. Don't worry! Mary Poppins Leia will be in episode 9. She will change herself into a Force ghost. Her character will be CGI'd into the movie. Kylo sensed Carrie Poppins Force umbrella power and that's why he couldn't fire a missile at the bridge of Leia's ship. In episode 9 Carrie Poppins will be master to Rey and Kylo. She will train Rey and Kylo how to Star Wars kiss. And she will teach them the greatest Force power of all! Force Umbrella power!

His TLJ ground battle command was solid character development for me. While I still think he wishes Rey would join him, & he's sympathetic to her, Kylo seems hell bent on destroying everything in sight, Rebels & First Order alike. He probably just wants it all to end. I think it's important, as I see it, that he really has no emotional attachment to the First Order. He's kinda there by default.
I could see him dying happily if he could off a bunch of the First Order if not entirely dismantling it, & if Rey succeeds with whatever it is she's trying to accomplish so be it (2 films in, all I know is she was a castoff with Force powers... and? No real arc).
