Wow!! Were the critics ever way off with this one. This is definitely one of those movies the critics definitely missed the point of.
This was supposed to be a fun musical and that's exactly what this was. The songs in this were fantastic, heck I even bought the soundtrack after I saw the movie. I couldn't believe the scores critics were giving this.
I looked back on the past movie musicals that have been released. Critics really don't seem to like musicals,so why are they even reviewing them? They're never going to be fair to them.
What exactly were critics wanting with this? Who else saw it? I'd like to know your thoughts. I'll definitely be buying this on blu-ray when it comes out as well.

A friend of mine that hates most musicals had to take his wife. Because he'd never admit it, she told me that he loved it.

I agree. I saw it today and I loved it. A true good old fashioned musical that wasn't looking for awards or trying to convey some heavy message. It was about great music, lavish musical numbers, interesting characters, and a fun story.
Wonderful, 9/10.

Definitely 1 of my top 5 movies of 2017. And an outstanding performance by Hugh Jackman.

Reading the reviews, I'm getting more complaints that the focus is on P.T. Barnum and the circus business in the first place. I mean, yeah Barnum did some shady stuff. But he had his redeeming qualities. Something I didn't know until I looked it up a week ago was that Barnum was an adamant abolitionist and even served as a state legislator sponsoring major public works projects like sanitation, hospitals, and vice laws. Was that in the movie by chance?

But he had his redeeming qualities. Something I didn't know until I looked it up a week ago was that Barnum was an adamant abolitionist and even served as a state legislator sponsoring major public works projects like sanitation, hospitals, and vice laws. Was that in the movie by chance? It's about the Circus and how his family and love life revolved around it, period. There is very little, or nothing, said & seen about the other parts of Barnum's life. The movie is not even 2 hours long so everything else you listed was left out. One of the main theme you'll see is inclusion, which makes sense but it feels like it tried to push for political correctness which was weird. Overall it's fun, but a bit like Lady Bird ( www.imdb.com/title/tt4925292/?ref_=nv_sr_1) it lacks some distinction or "wow" factor to really set it apart from similar types of movies. To me the biggest wow factor was the lovely Rebecca Ferguson ( taken from a promo: ) . Even if she wasn't actually singing ( www.popsugar.com/entertainment/Rebecca-Ferguson-Really-Singing-Greatest-Showman-44360561) she was stunning in the short screen time she had. I didn't see it but I knew Hugh Jackman could sing and dance since he played in The Boy from Oz ( www.playbill.com/production/the-boy-from-oz-imperial-theatre-vault-0000006032, www.youtube.com/watch?v=b20D_ON2Etc ) and he did deliver. Zack Efron also delivered but he's wasn't on Jackman level though. Michelle Williams plays Charity Barnum, P.T.'s (Jackman) wife and her performance is on par with what was needed and the others. Overall the performances are good but not to the point where any could get an Oscar for it. Talking about the statuettes, the movie could still win for costume design, for some music categories and maybe for production design. I might be wrong for the statement above but you can be sure it won't win for visual effects since the CGI is pretty average. Now, those might have annoyed me and me alone but I wished there would have been more inclusion of the crowd into the dancing parts and some of the songs felt too much like 2017 stuff for the era portrayed. I mean, sure it is a musical and with a modern feel to it but it's also partially a biography, so it was weird. Still, despite it's small flaws the movie is still enjoyable. Solid 7.5/10

I generally try to avoid chalking it up to conspiracy theories for such reactions but it did seem like there was an agenda to disparage the movie because of the negative image that circuses have these days. I mean, it's not a time where something like The Greatest Show on Earth can possibly hope to win Best Picture anymore.

While the performances, songs and choreography were amazing, I think the movie lacks a bit of depth in its story and characters. It's about the birth of the circus, so ideally it should be rich with details on the subject, instead the film gets bogged down in delivering its sentimental message. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it, but this is far from a great film.

I'm with the critics on this one. To me it is the first great disappointment of the year. The performances (even from Efron) were pretty good, but music and choreography were mediocre. Also the plot felt really rushed, it seemed to take Barnum only an instant to get from dishwasher to millionaire.
