What on Earth did I just watch. Oh boy.
3 things.
1) The Yoda scene destroying the ancient jedi books could very well be the worst scene in movie franchise history. Like what is cool about the jedi is that they are this ancient samurai monk order that have their way of doing things, own rules that are different from the rest of society etc. I don't give a damn about the nerd "oh but they screwed up so many things" debates people have, that is not the question. Effective or not, they were cool, and getting rid of what made them unique and special is extremely stupid. It'd be like if in book 6 of Harry Potter they went "fuck this magic shit, let's go play computer games." Because without rules and order, what are the jedi? A bunch of hippies sitting their asses on a rock "feeling" the water? Yoda's theory that Rey already possesses everything the books have to offer is the worst line in Star Wars history, dumber than anything Jar Jar has farted out. As powerful as Rey seems to be, she has no structure, no guiding principles, she is pure instinct and nothing else. If that's all that jedi is, then that's dumb and uninteresting. Just amazingly stupid choice of a direction here and I can't understand why everyone who holds Star Wars dear didn't stop this final cut from delivering this legacy-destroying scene.
2) Kylo was more cringe-worthy than a 2000 Emo band. Like it was surreal that the way he was acting was actually part of the movie and not some SNL spoof. That's not "deep conflicted emotion," that's crying like a 13 year old girl on her period. And people thought Anakin was embarrassing? Anakin's sand/skin quote or whatever is considered his most embarrassing moment is basically Rambo:First Blood compared to Kylo's crying shtick. I mean I like the actor, it's not that he didn't do a good job with what he was given, but I have never seen anything more teeny cringe-worthy in cinema.
3) Rey. I read that part of the debate over the TLJ is whether there were too many females or all of that dumbass political bullshit. Whatever. What I want to know is why is the female lead presented as an illogical teen girl?
Why is she so utterly obsessed with Kylo Ren and how he turns out? Is she Mother Theresa, who simply loves all people and wants them to turn to the light? If so, why does she not give the slightest damn about any of the other bad guys? She's killing them, blasting them, running away not giving a damn about thousands upon thousands who need redemption stories, and her only focus is Kylo. She's not his family, hell she only just met any of these dudes months ago.
The obvious reason is that she has the hots for him, and they are likely leading this up to be a Kylo-Rey saving romance at the end. But she has the hots for someone who killed or tried to kill her friends, her father figures, tried to kill her, captured her, tortured her, did rape-ish actions to her mind. This has to be the worst "message" I can possibly think of to send women or anyone for that matter if Star Wars deems a Kylo-Ren romance acceptable. Horrifically bad.
4) Bonus - where are the lightsaber fights? The OT and especially the PT, whatever their faults, had awesome lightsaber fights. It's what makes Star Wars unique and cool. But in both Force Awakens and TLJ, all light saber scenes are basically "tee-hee look at that noob is using a lighsaber!" No actual serious badass fights yet, just the new characters nergasaming about holding one. I could understand the Force Awakens treating it in this matter, but two movies into a trilogy and still no serious fights? Rey will absolutely have to be mastering to the max and spending every second scene having amazing lightaber duels in the 3rd movie to make up for this. Which, I am not expecting at all.
Basically who the hell thought Rian Johnson understands anything about Star Wars, let alone allow him to make a movie on it?
