I was not able to participate in the recent CFB1 discussion of the film, but reading that thread got me to rewatch it for the first time in some years. Has anyone ever noticed how similar the plot is to Kind Hearts & Coronets? I don't think it works with Douglas. He's much to strong a personality to play "man of thousand faces", "lose yourself in the character" role. He and Scott probably should have switched parts. Let Douglas be the intrepid hero (they could explain his accent by making him an American friend of the family, or just ignore it altogether) and let Scott play the various characters of the murderer. ![](http://i.imgur.com/1uoiZTy.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/1O6FAOk.jpg) Working on the makeup: ![](http://i.imgur.com/DDVCloA.jpg)

Enjoyed the movie, but the secondary "mystery" as to who played certain cameo roles just didn't work. I don't think the disguises fooled anyone.

I'm bumping this thread b/c, as I wrote, I was not able to participate in the CFB discussion on TLOAM, and now that we have more IMDb refugees here perhaps we can continue that conversation. ![](https://media.giphy.com/media/HfVe7XvbSMhZS/giphy.gif) ![](http://i.imgur.com/CtEyXYi.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/GxwPgNS.jpg)

It was a gimmick intended to enhance boxoffice performance. Some of the disguises don't so well, especially Robert Mitchum. And I think one cameo isn't really authentic. Burt Lancaster seems to have only been present for the unmasking, with somebody else playing "his" part in the actual regular portion of the film.

"Sinatra's" role in the actual scene was supposedly played by character actor Dave Willock"I posted this on the original CFB thread: "In one of Tom Weaver's interview books, Jan Merlin is interviewed about what should be called The HOAX of Adrian Mesenger. In brief, Merlin says that only Tony Curtis and Robert Mitchum actually appear in the movie proper, wearing the rubber faces. The roles supposedly played by Sinatra and Lancaster are filled by other actors in rubber, with dubbed voices. Paul Frees dubs the Sinatra character. As for Douglas, he only actually does one of his disguises, in addition to the washroom changeover and the big reveal at the climax. The rest of the time it's Jan Merlin - and this includes the curtain-call at the end: Douglas only appears to remove the last rubber face and say "Ladies and gentlemen, The End!" Which brings us to the Question, what was the point?" yvettecandraw.blogspot.com/2011/08/tuesdays-overlooked-movies-list-of.htmlAnd, it is very obvious that the Gypsy's distinctive voice belongs to Paul Frees.

I love the movie, the mystery, the suspense. The guest appearances date it, I agree, but they don't spoil Adrian Messenger for me. If anything they enhance, put it in its place, so to speak, as a product of its time. I think it's a sort of trick movie, and if you're looking for something serious it could be a letdown. Director John Huston seems to be having fun with the material, and yet there are some vert dark moments in the film, and the evil of the villain is emphasized, which to my eyes make the film feel larger than life. The List Of Adrian Messenger is definitely a "not for everyone" kind of movie, rather than a "something for everyone" type.

So, would anyone like to see Hollywood take another crack at it? With today's makeup effects, and a disguised guest cast more enthusiastic about actually appearing in the movie, would it be worth the effort.
