As some of you may know, I have mixed feeling about "The Last Jedi and, judging by many of the posts here, I am not alone. But after reflecting on the film a bit, I remember feeling the same way about "The Empire Strikes Back" when I first saw it years ago. A feeling that was apparently shared by many movie going audience back in 1980.
How about you? Did you have similar feelings the first time you saw "The Empire Strikes Back"?

I was 14 in 1980, and had anxiously awaited that film for 3 years. I had experience with sequels before, as I had seen Jaws 2. So armed with my knowledge of Star Wars and what I knew of sequels, I went in to see what I thought would be Star Wars 2. We're so smart at 14.
Everything was just great, it had it all, new ships, characters, excitement, then Luke gets his hand cut off and Vader tells him he's his dad, and Luke gets saved at the last minute, and they put a new hand on him, and then credits start rolling.... I'm left wondering what just happened! Looking around I thought this may be one of those "Intermission" things I had heard of, then everybody started getting up. Still confused, I walked out, and everybody was leaving. I was stunned. The movie was over, but the story wasn't. There was nothing to cheer about. The rebels pretty much lost, I had left Star Wars feeling ecstatic. I left The Empire Strikes Back feeling pretty melancholy. It was pretty disappointing...
Then the 3 years between Empire and Jedi happened, and through those years I learned to enjoy a story in progress. Not one that was nice and tidy in each installment, but one that really didn't have the resolution I was used to having when the film was complete. I wasn't left with just looking back at what I had seen with the only wonder being how the players would come back to give me another story with the same familiar characters. This time I was left wondering how this story would be completed. This wasn't just some cliffhanger, this was a completely unfinished story in progress. And as it sunk in during the months and years that followed, that initial confusion and pain turned to wonder and enjoyment.
So Empire was a "Kinda" film when I walked out, but over the time between the films, I came to love it like no other film.

In between "yes" and "kinda". I liked it, but preferred A New Hope for its less drabby tone and more conclusive ending.

This question should only be answered by those that had to wait 3 years for ROTJ. I liked Empire but it wasn't no Star Wars! and then it grew and grew, now it's my favorite.
But those years beteween empire and rotj I had the distinct impression that nothing would be as Star Wars ever again. They ruined Leia + Luke! Han solo dosen't deserve the girl, LUKE does!!!! WTF?
Darth vader is lukes father? They mad obi wan a liar what the hell! (Cool Though)
Why so much time in the MF doing absolutely nothing! And didn't the fucking empire have more than three fighters WTH?
Yoda was and always is amazing.
Luke fucking things up for everyone by going against yoda´s wishes. He's kinda of a moron throught the movie.
And lando is the new captain of the MF no! That lying SOB!
Why did they ruined obi-wan's sacrifice if he can just come back as a ghost! That ruins the character. What was th sacrifice?
They retconned stufff (at the time there wasn't that term i don't think)
At least Luke is with Leia again...
Battle of hoth was amazing though, the higlight of the movie at the time but the AT-At were higly unstable it's called wheels and tracks DUUUH . But isn't the battle at the end?
No space battle at the end... STAR wars duuuh
So, yeah i Loved it but it had to grow on me.
ROTJ was great except the fucking Ewoks(i will never forgive lucas for not beying kashyyyk), give me a break!

I'm not old enough to have watched Empire when it came out and I can't remember the first time I watched it. As far as I can remember I've always seen Empire so I also don't know my reaction to the father reveal. I do know that as a young kid it wasn't my favorite of the Star Wars movies, but I did like it. Now, however, it's easily my favorite Star Wars movie and one of my favorite movies of all-time.
