I own shares in Disney, and I think this may be a poor commercial decision if countries like Russia ban the film, and Christians boycott it elsewhere. Disney will be fine Geez... You would think this was a love story between Beast & Gaston. The character is totally inconsequential and meant to be harmless while appeasing gay rights groups. It's a win win and no American company should worry about what those hoodlums in Russia want. Why is it necessary to appease gay rights groups? Why not have a token character in it from every other minority group? Why not a Lithuanian midget?

This has nothing to do with equality for all but rather representation for a money making &/or vocal demographic.
There's probably a black dude in it too.
Plus it is entirely conceivable that a gay dude existed in France at the time the story took place.

To add...Regardless of what anyone's particular issue is with gay folks, it's undeniable that they are officially a normal aspect of secular society at this point.
Disney is not a religious company.
It is silly to be concerned with the notion that the largest, most profitable movie studio out there will decide to make one supporting character gay.

I could see something like this being an issue for people who aren't terribly confident in their sexuality. What is LeFou is the final straw that sends them to the gay side?

I've been to Henagar (or driven through it) and I can tell you straight up that the theater owners are taking precisely zero monetary risk in not showing a live action musical. "Deliverance" is considered a documentary there.

Wouldn't it be kinda strange to you if they remade 20,000 Leagues and ma Conseil and the Professor lovers? The Jungle Book, introducing Sven, the gay zebra? Song of the South with a new gay character, Br'er Milo?

Probably because of the subtle bromancery in the original. It's like remaking an old Paul Lind movie and just admitting his sexuality rather than hinting at it. They just made what was implied more obvious. Not to spoil anything, but when you see it I don't think you're going to find it a terribly impactful moment.
That would sort of be arbitrary, though I could certainly see tossing in a gay relationship somewhere when remaking old material, simply to reflect the societal changes.

I'm not certain how we got from giving one nod to a gay character to "feature a token character from every minority group" - every movie will have a cast the size of a Bollywood musical. In part, this move on the part of arts and culture is a response to the decades gays had to spend hiding their nature for fear of violence. I can't recall the last closeted Lithuanian midget. That shit is hard to hide.

Apparently you can either have only white male hetero people in your movie, or one of everything in the entire world. Nothing in between.
Because... something.

Admin what do you think? (It appears he's fine with it, and with the Ada Lovelace parody is still there.) Oh well, it was pretty naive of me to expect otherwise...

Why is it necessary to exclude gay characters from movies? Not including gay characters is not exactly the same as excluding them. I remember some feminist film critics that were bothered that "Kramer vs. Kramer" excluded a working mother. It had a working father. It was not as if dozens of other films didn't have working mothers in them.

Mine came from a nickname some friends gave me when they were not happy with me over a failed party we had. They blamed me for everything that went wrong. So because he wonders about some parody you have jumped to a conclusion? But seriously what do you think about my worries about the inclusion of a gay character in this movie? I think it might hurt the bottom line.

So you think it will help the value of my shares? That is an interesting point, will the people boycotting the film be a larger group than the one attracted to the movie because it has a gay character in it?

Look how much these conservative assholes lost their shit when Sulu was gay in Star Trek: Beyond, even though it was barely noticeable. I actually missed it. I remember hearing he was gay, but when I finished the movie I was like, wasn't Sulu supposed to be gay?

That shit is hard to hide. As a shareholder I certainly do not wish an explosion in the cast size when approaching movies. But you raise a good point, perhaps making the gay character a Lithuanian midget would have clicked at least two minority groups of the list in terms of representation.
