Back in the 1970s I was in contact with former AMPAS head librarians Anthony Slide and Val Amendarez almost on a weekly basis asking them for copies of the official/legal credit listings for movie main and end titles. I cannot begin to tell you how helpful they were. Since I was interested in screen credits I eventually got around to the Oscar nominating process. During the 1970s Variety would publish each year the 10 preliminary selections in all of the technical categories. From these 10 selections the final five nominees were chosen. Over the course of my dealings with Slide and Almendarez they were able to provide the preliminary selections for the release years 1964-1979.
Since Oscar time is around the corner I thought I would share this info with you guys a year per day or as close to one a day as I can get, taking into account real life breaking in. It is fun to compare what was nominated and what was not.
So here is the first year, 1964. The final five nominees will be in bold print and the eventual winner will be underlined, bold and in italics.
