The city itself, or is the whole Greater Manchester area in play?

The greatest bands that ever existed come from Manchester (or the greater area).
The Fall The Smiths The Stone Roses Joy Division New Order The Bodines The Chameleons Happy Mondays Theater Of Hate The Buzzcocks Easterhouse
Notice I didn't put Oasis on that list.

Boy, this Manc band Easterhouse should have been HUGE. They really could have been better than all the others.
Killer guitars (their guitarist was asked to replace Marr after The Smiths split) and the most politically biting lyrics of the time.
If you are unfamiliar with Easterhouse just listen to the breakdown at 2:45. You will be hooked onto this band forever.
"Where is the man who's speaking out for me? Community leaders want more black shopkeepers The unions are saying the jobs on the way And I'm told that my home's on a nuclear free zone That ain't much help when there's bills to be paid. Police accountability, non-nuclear defense strategy This foolish ideology has made the fight a mockery!"

And lets not forget, arguably the most prolific recording artist ever (especially if not counting noise):

Technically Stockport, but I've been on the bus between the two, so it's close enough.
