I'll say this, the tone has nothing to do with BvS being disappointing. Even though I believe Zack Snyder is a DC fan, I think he misinterpreted these characters from the comics. Like for example, Batman shooting people. Yes, Batman shot people in The Dark Knight Returns comic. But what Zack Snyder forgot was that Batman was using rubber bullets. -_- So yeah. Zack Snyder doesn't exactly have a clear direction with these characters.

They all can't be batman. Superman should not be brooding superbatman. Wonderwoman should never be batman with tits. Etc...
I love superman, the fun, boy scout character that he is. But the DCEU, superman is not. They have a character problem. And the most WTF one to me is Lex Luthor... Though many of the ones from Suicide Squad may come close to topping it.
I have said they have a character problem for a long time. They don't let the characters that we know and love be the characters we know and love. They try to change the tone of the character to what they feel would sell better (incorrectly). Not so much the tone of the movie themselves... But except for perhaps batman, most of the characters simply are not who they want to try and make them.
