Last Jedi Opening weekend: 27 million
Force Awakens: 54 million
Last jedi debuts to 9 million opening day in China which puts it far behind a local Chinese movie called THE EX FILE 3.Star Wars franchise's challenges in China are well established by now. The Force Awakens earned $124 million in the Middle Kingdom in 2016, but that was only enough to rank 13th in China for the year, a soft finish compared to its all-time number-one showing in North America ($936.6 million).
Perhaps most troubling for Disney, the Chinese audience seems to be liking the Star Wars universe less and less. Despite featuring two Chinese stars, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story earned just $69.5 million for a 35th place finish last year (after, again coming in first place in the USA)

That's China actually has good taste in movies. They loved the Prequels, but rightfully rejected this movie.

And $10 bet Disney will not alter direction because of it, despite claims that the Chinese box office is so important to them.

The Chinese government is very protective of its own movie industry

Oh, no. How will the franchise ever survive? I can think of a billion reasons.

The Chinese government is very protective of its own movie industry Not really if we take censorship into account.

With its screen share already on the wane and Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle coming on Friday, The Last Jedi definitely won't match Force Awakens' $124 million China total, and may not even reach Rogue One's $69 million haul. Both of those films faded fast after their opening frames, and the erosion is likely to be worse for Jedi.

I was watching a video on why that happened. It's actually not surprising. The Star Wars franchise just doesn't have the appeal that it does in the states. What is ironic is that some of the biggest domestic box office disappointments e.g. Transformers:The Last Knight and Pirates of the Carribbean:Dead Men Tell no Tales were one of China's highest grossing films of 2017.
