He turned down the part of Gilligan ... equally as silly a premise as the Car but it stuck the viewers fancy Bio quote : He turned down the title role in Gilligan's Island (1964), which he rightfully deemed inane, but instead chose the equally silly My Mother the Car (1965). It proved to be a detrimental career move. While "Gilligan" became a surprise hit that still runs in syndication four decades later, Jerry had to live down starring in one of the most lambasted sitcoms of all time. Truthfully, the two shows were on an equal (sub)par with each other. It was just a cruel luck of the draw that Jerry ended up biting the bullet while Gilligan's Bob Denver found cult celebrity.

I really liked "My Mother, The Car" and watched every episode and to this day I can sing the theme song. Jerry's comedy routine was Steve Martin before Steve. Very funny. I liked My Mother the Car when I saw repeats as a kid. It really is a show that kids would love. If it had been on Saturday mornings instead of prime-time, it might have had a longer run.

I agree, but, sadly, it was never meant to be a kids' show. Kinda makes me wonder if TV producers in the '60's believed that American adults had the mentality of kids. Praise the Lord for Norman Lear and other such producers of the '70's who actually made sitcoms for adults.

JERRY VAN DYKE is listed as having 42 TV CREDITS !
Many of them are series on which he was a regular. Many are series on which he was a guest star.
The one "total disaster" (depending on ones views) ran for an entire season... 30 episodes.. It was NOT cancelled after a couple of weeks.
Hardly a failure.
Funny funny man who deserves a proper celebration of his life.
