According to Wiki, actor Jerry Van Dyke died today at age 86. I always felt bad that his entire life was in the shadow of his older brother Dick. Seems that his main claim to fame was as the star of arguably the worst sitcom in TV history: MY MOTHER THE CAR.
May he RIP.

He had a huge hit with Coach, why not mention that instead of some obscure flop? You make it seem like he lived a life of pure misery, there were some good times, I'm sure. R.I.P. JVD

Jerry was having a film career when Dick couldn’t get noticed. Then Dick got Bye Bye Birdie , then the DVD Show, then a string of movies. Then his career and marriage went south while Jerry was doing Coach. I think they actually worked like pistons in an engine, while one was up the other was down.
I have no idea how they saw their relative success. I know Dick was not always MR nice guy, but tended to get Jerry guest roles in any show where he had some control.
I didn’t enjoy Jerry’s banjo stand up act, or his presence as a loveable nerd in films like McClintoc , but he was funny on coach . I’m sorry he’s gone.

Seems that his main claim to fame was as the star of arguably the worst sitcom in TV history: MY MOTHER THE CAR. I can think of three sitcoms that were amazingly, unbelievably worse than "My Mother the Car": "The Trouble with Tracy", "Melody Rules" and some obscure 2000s-era religious sitcom whose name escapes me.... At least "My Mother the Car" was shot on beautiful Eastmancolor film stock!

A wonderfully funny man ! We can continue to enjoy the many gifts he made for us through the years.
To snsuroneReading about the deaths of people many like and admire is hard enough without plowing through negativity. petrolino and Richard Kimble have a thread devoted to properly worded and respectful death announcements. Obituary Thread 2018

I really liked "My Mother, The Car" and watched every episode and to this day I can sing the theme song.
Jerry's comedy routine was Steve Martin before Steve. Very funny.

When you come right down to it, was it any sillier than a talking horse ? or a talking basset hound named Cleo ? or multiple aliens hiding out in multiple human's houses ?

No, it wasn't, and there was another sitcom that, IMHO, was even worse. called IT'S ABOUT TIME, with cave people speaking in "Noo Yawk" accents. It's the critics and TV historians that have rated MMTC as the worst sitcom ever.
