As a big fan of 90's hip-hop, this was my most eagerly anticipated film of summer 2015.
Upon first viewing I enjoyed it and gave it around 8/10, but now a couple years later, I would give it a 7/10.
It's certainly an entertaining film. The main trio (Jason Mitchell, O'Shea Jackson Jr. and Corey Hawkins) all do a good job as Eazy-E, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre respectively and kept me interested throughout. I also liked the locations and how they made the concerts come alive and in your face. N.W.A were a group that celebrated chaotic excess and this film got that feeling across.
On the downside, you can tell Cube and Dre were heavily involved in the film's production as they avoid mentioning N.W.A's less than glamorous aspects - Dr. Dre's violent abuse of women (particularly his assault on TV host, Dee Barnes) and their misogynistic lyrics. Group members MC Ren (who was one of the main rappers and lyricists) and DJ Yella are treated as minor side characters. Overall, they just try to cram in too much material and the second half (where Dre forms Death row) just feels structurally unbalanced.
A good film, but the story of one of rap's most notorious groups needed a more objective look to be really satisfying.
