Its so totally baffling.She died A YEAR before the release of Last Jedi.Lots of time to make changes or just cut the Mary poppins moment. Now she will obviously be killed off screen or just DISAPPEAR without trace in the next episode.
They have less than 2 years to make the next one and they dont even have a finished script
Gonna be another rushed job for the next star wars!
It's possible that Carrie Fisher's death was a major contributing factor to the massive changes that Star Wars: Episode IX is now going through. Colin Trevorrow has left the project as director and J.J. Abrams is back. In addition to that change, the script process is starting over. Whatever the original plan was, and even whatever initial changes they had planned to make, are all out the window as the final chapter is now being written from scratch. The final version of Star Wars: Episode IX may bear little resemblance to whatever was initially envisioned.
They are chasing a release date that seem to be set in stone. They can push it back 6 months, but cristmas 2020 is out of the question since Avatar 2 is coming out then.

To me what they obviously should've done was had Leia do the suicide run, instead of Holdo.
Although we'd miss out on the reunion scene between Leia & Luke, but they still could've included that on the DVD/Blu-ray.

Forgot to add: they should've kept Luke alive.
Before people respond, I say this as a practical matter since Carrie Fisher cannot be in Ep 9 but Mark Hamill would be able to.

They had planned for the 9th to be about her so we have heard. They might have Luke as a force ghost but since they are committed to "white man must die out" story themes and Hamill pissed off the Disney masters, I wouldn't bet on that.
The movie dropped out of first place within three weeks--this should be like a nuclear bomb hitting Disney if they really care so much about profit-but they don't seem to care.
Seems to be like a propaganda leaflet to them.

They didnt know Carrie would die. What peoples doesnt seems to understand is that she had already finish filming her scene when she passed away.

I think that, to some degree, there was a thought that they didn't want to take away from her final performance in the saga. They wanted her to be able to have given that performance, in it's entirety. (Seeing Holdo's sacrifice, talking to Luke one last time, effectively handing over the reigns she & Luke had over to Poe & Rey, etc.) And I think they wanted to preserve every moment of her, on film, that they could. And, considering what all had already been filmed/etc., I don't think they felt they could rush in, rewrite the movie in such a way not-to-kill Luke and kill of Leia, and do it effectively with half the twins already missing, only a few months to get it done in time for all the CGI stuff to be added in.
And, as stated earlier by another poster, I think they didn't want to do that. Similar to STAR TREK BEYOND not-killing Chekov on screen to explain his absence in any future installments, and I wouldn't be surprised if something like how STB handled Leonard Nemoy's passing in real life, is how they'll handle Leia's absence/Carrie Fischer's death in episode 9.
One way to do it would be to make sure there is a time-jump, unlike how E8 picked up 1 minute after E7 ended, so perhaps it has been a year or two since the Resistance lost the last Rebel base and Luke Skywalker become one with the Force. Leia had managed to work with Poe, and others, finding new bases, recruiting new people, gathering more troops/weapons/supplies/supporters, Finn and Rose have also helped with the recruiting efforts, Rey has found a few Force-sensitives that she's shared the knowledge of the Jedi books with, Chewie/R2/3PO are still helping Rey and Leia, and the First Order is regrouping after losing Snoke and the promotion of the unstable Krybaby Ren. But, just recently, Leia has died due to complications from her injuries suffered in LAST JEDI and now Poe is left to charge on without her just as Rey is left to carry on the Jedi legacy without Luke. So it is recent enough for the characters, that their grief is still apparent and still acutely felt among the ranks and command staff, but not so new that the movie opens with Leia's funeral, and instead we see how the weight of responsibility and legacy on Poe's newly-tired out shoulders and how Rey is dealing with all that happened in LAST JEDI and the months following it.
Another way would be coming in even more time after Leia's death, such as on the second anniversary of her death, when there is a moment of silence over it during some big meeting among the Rebels/Resistance. Poe and a couple others are in charge of the continued fight against the First Order. Rey is working with them, as are Finn and Rose. Then the movie launches off from there, and Leia's death is treated the way Han's was in LAST JEDI. They've said they aren't going to use CGI-treated footage of her from other movies and they aren't using stuff off the cutting room floor from LAST JEDI, so I would assume that means we're not getting any footage of Leia except for maybe a holo-image or something like that (such as the picture of the bridge crew that Spock had with him and were given to NuSpock as part of his elder counterpart's effects, in STAR TREK BEYOND), showing her as a younger woman with Han and/or Luke from their RETURN OF THE JEDI days.

It's beaten all kinds of other Box Officer records so far, it looks like China really DOESN'T matter because the film doesn't need foreign backup from there. |

Except when it comes to domestic box office loss, then it does matter. And it dropped off in three weeks which was a record but apparently that doesn't matter because it broke some other records. And in the end, records is what matters. or doesn't. I just love Wall Street rationales. |
