I know that she is nominated for best director and I have heard her name before, but seriously who is she? Everyone is like oh that's Greta Gerwig, like she's been some huge established/successful name for decades. I was watching that CBS Sunday morning show with Jean Pauley yesterday and they did an interview with her. She was referred to as something ridiculous like the most important actor of her generation. I can't name a single thing that I've ever seen her in, can you?

I first saw her in the Arthur remake in 2011. She was also in the Ben Stiller movie Greenberg. I also saw her in 1 other movie whose title I can't even remember.
She usually plays in quirky, self-discovery type movies.

She may be important with the inner circle. I don't know. The only movie before Lady Bird I can connect her with was Francis Ha which I thought quirky and cute. She got nominated for directing Lady Bird in only a few of the awards. Her screenplay writing of Lady Bird is more of the focus than the direction.

LOL, well that's not exactly helping with clarifying who she is and why she so important.

I was responding to that. I don't feel she's important. I did attempt to clarify who she is when I said she usually plays in quirky, self-discovery type movies.

You cited a critical and commercial bomb, some movie I never heard of, and one that you admittedly can't even remember the name of as your third example. I'm not criticizing you, I'm saying that's just further proof that all this hullabaloo about how were supposed to know who she is seems a little unjustified.

Gerwig described her movie has the story of the growth of a girl and the mother-daughter relationship. Sounds like a coming-of-age movie, yet there is very little shown about it and somehow it is listed and won as a comedy... It seems that she knows the right people more than she has talent.

Everybody is a nobody until they're a somebody. Now she's a somebody.

I watched her in Greenberg. A few years ago, her film, Frances Ha, made the award circles.

Quirky hipster chick from the mumblecore scene. Like her as an actress (House of the Devil, Baghead). Thought I liked her as a filmmaker based on Frances Ha, but Lady Bird has raised some doubts.

She was in "Greenberg", which I watched a few weeks ago. Her nipples were exposed in it.

I never thought she was anything to write home about. Arthur 2011 certainly didn't help that.

Lady Bird certainly deserves the writing nomination tomorrow and may have good chance to win it too. It is a decent movie with an emotionally high ending. However, I sincerely hope Greta Gerwig DO NOT get the director nomination just because she is a woman. Lady Bird strength is on writing and acting. Saoirse Ronan basically carried the movie. Direction? There were so many more movies in the past with better woman direction. If they want to nominate a woman so badly, I would rather see them nominate Dee Rees.

I can't name a single thing that I've ever seen her in, can you? The only movie I've ever seen her in is Hannah Takes the Stairs.
