Watched it the other day, and it wasn't a "rotten" movie. It wasn't overly depressing, like most Hollywood movies.
But it was lame. Think I'll be with the consensus there.
The "biggest" problem was "motivation". There was not one single character motivation that was believable, aside from a few times when they ran from danger.
It had a "story board" look, like it was just an excuse for a story board artist to justify, or more likely "rationalize", his or her story book.
There were a lot of "still" picture looks, and obvious "story board" looks to the movie, and that's a bad sign. Story board artists have no inspiration or vision. They're mechanics, for the most part, and this was a "mechanical movie".
And now it is OFFICIAL! SKULL ISLAND 3/10

The only motivation that didn't make sense was Samuel Jackson's.
I think both discovery and survival are legit reasons to do something for a plot.

B+ I quite like it.
Noticeable goof, the filmmaker's money shot of Kong at dusk/sundown was their genesis sell to studio heads. Then they spend 30+ minutes in the film at sunset, only the sun never goes down lols, not until the village or whatever.

I thought Colonel Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) had a good motivation for going after Kong since he lost his men to him.
Overall, I actually enjoyed it.

Looks like it packed some entertainment in, enough for some to enjoy it.
But as stated, Sam Jackson's motivation was goofy at best, on less than first grade level. None of the motivation was believable. But I guess the point is that this was made to be mindless boggle fun.
Wasn't enough to make up for the stupidity.

7/10 which becomes 8/10 for JCR. What is JCR? Jesus Christ Returns? Jiminy Cricket Rejects? Jersey City Rednecks? Jerks Crying "Run"? Jam Cake Rum?

John C. Reilley, I'm gonna guess. And yes-- he deserves major kudos cause he was the best part of the movie. Although I liked the whole movie, and I didn't have trouble with anyone's motivation. As for Samuel L. Jackson's Parckard, I thought part of it was he knew what he and his men were going home to- a country ashamed of them, plus he's dealing with how he's watched so many of his men die during the war and again here on the island, plus frustrated rage at his bosses/civilians/politicians/himself, and he's also a soldier who is about to be useless (in his eyes!) after having basically outlived his usefulness and outlived the time where soldiers were respected heroes when they came home. He's old enough to remember the generation Hiddleston's character father belonged to, and how they were treated when they got home. I kept wishing they'd kill Jackson's character instead of Toby Kebbell's character, especially after they let him see Kong wounded and tending to his injuries before the sea creature attacked.

While it's a bit looser than Godzilla, I'm glad there's no Michael Bay style idiocy bringing it down either.
If this franchise doesn't appease MB Transformer fans, I'm very okay with it.

I really loved Kong: Skull Island. It's an absolutely silly and ridiculous movie in every way, but the sum of it's ridiculousness comes together in a ridiculously fun way. It has all the shortcomings of Godzilla '14, except it's not a drag to watch. I really hope the upcoming movies in this shared universe share it's tone and pace.

Despite what some here say, there is no credible motivation for most of the characters. Even the beginning attack against the giant ape goes without any possible explanation. Now one can believe the gung-ho courage of military men who know they'll die any way, but none of the other "courage" comes across with any iota of credibility. The "Hollywood" approach of unkillable evil monsters was trite a half century ago, and can only produce thrills among the most Beavis and Butthead viewers.
If one is looking for 3 year old cartoon action, one can accept this, but it's ridiculously hateful and demonic for any age group.
3/10 is probably generous.

And now it is OFFICIAL! SKULL ISLAND 3/10 Its even worse than that. It was only an excuse to introduce the "super hero" version of King Kong. Bigger, much taller, more muscular, able to stand up to... GODZILLA! For Kong v Godzilla: Dawn of Monster Smackdown 2020. The movie exists for no other reason. Its all set-up.
Still... I had fun with it.
