I think a lot of housekeeping and maintenance staff are about to get an earful from irritated guests. What's the issue that it can't wait until guests check out?

Isn’t there a latch on the inside of the door that prevents staff from walking into someone’s room?

Otherwise if a guest died in the room, how would they get them out? Good point, but can't limits be set? Most of us have pretty good reasons for having do not disturb signs (and turning off phones), most of which scarcely require an explanation. As to a person dying, well, leaving aside murder, I think that nowadays people with serious health conditions have phones and various medical alert devices, can maybe even alert the management of a hotel that they have a medical issue, thus checking in or being checked in on, just to make sure, would be a good option. Doing away altogether,--with no ifs, ands or buts about it--the concept of do not disturb altogether strikes me as unfair to prospective guests.

Otherwise if a guest died in the room, how would they get them out? Maybe we’re thing of different things, because the latch from the inside would be difficult to open from the outside. However, you’re right. The staff need a way to get into a room in case of an emergency.

If they had to get in the room for an emergency I'm sure there's a janitor or someone else that has the keys to all the rooms.
Also, If you have a Room Occupied sign on your door there's a chance your door is locked. If housekeeping and maintenance can just walk in anyway then they absolutely have keys to the rooms.
Do Disney hotels still use conventional key locks or have they moved on to a sliding key card/key pad? If that's the case then they easily have master access to all the rooms.

Massive overreaction to one horrible incident. Lots of people like to have sex in hotel rooms, and you're telling me even if there's a sign on the door, they're still going to knock?

I think what gets me more than this is when the sign is off all day, because you're out, and they STILL haven't made up the room.

All useless if they die in their sleep in the middle of the night. Or if someone with no health issues has an embolism or even chokes on a meal.

I'm curious what the policies were in the past. There must have always been exceptional occasions,--and not just fires and catastrophic events generally--when hotel staffs have had access to locked rooms and opened them in case of emergency. there must be something in the fine print when someone signs into a hotel or motel that allows for exceptional occasions. What happened when ocean liners hit icebergs? There are issues beyond personal safety that must enable staff or crew to gain entrance to rooms. After all, a ship or hotel is owned by someone. Guests are not owners. They have their rights to privacy within reason.
