I have often thought the film to possibly carry the wrong title as Muriel has changed her name to Mariel by the time of the wedding. I had a girlfriend that disliked the film. I explained what I admired in it, such as how it is almost perfectly written, directed and acted from the start of wedding to the end of the film. It is here that it shifts gears from comedy to serious drama (triggered by the mother's fate) and then back to comedy to finish. I find American directors usually fail in doing something like this, but in this Australian film it seems effortless.
