'Tulsa' is set during an oil boom in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, the city nicknamed the "Oil Capital of the World". An oil well blowout on a site run by The Tanner Petroleum Corporation leaves Nelse Lansing (Harry Shannon) dead. Nelse's daughter Cherokee (Susan Hayward) takes on greedy oil baron Bruce Tanner (Lloyd Gough) by building her own oil field.
'Tulsa' is a cautionary tale in which regulations are ignored by big corporate powers which eventually leads to wrecked livelihoods, additional expense and human tragedy. Refinery discharges and oil deposits are discovered to be causing unnecessary fire hazards and rising water pollution. This has the effect of poisoning livestock and destroying local wildlife which draws the attention of progressive environmentalist Brad Brady (Robert Preston) and rabid intellectual Jim Redbird (Pedro Armendariz). Acts of corruption, fed by elitism, nepotism and privilege, are drastically laid bare as the positives and negatives of oil production are examined.
'Tulsa' is radical revenge drama that deals with bold politics and exhibits genuine rage. Director Stuart Heisler was an accomplished editor and his skills are put to good use during a spectacular showpiece oil disaster that pushes superimposition to its limits. Nathan Juran's art direction projects gaiety, opulence and the spirit of the times against snapshots of industrial wonder as heavy machinery and technical innovation collide to milk the arid Oklahoman landscape. Susan Hayward performs with fierce pride as Cherokee, chiseling a character cut for the ages. The story is narrated by Chill Wills and features a cameo from Lola Albright of Akron, Ohio, the "Rubber Capital of the World".
"There are many people still living in west Georgia who tell fond stories of Susan Hayward living like “an ordinary person” in Carrollton. Many in Carrollton considered her a friend, and she threw herself into many local affairs. She seemed to enjoy the contrast between her life in west Georgia and Hollywood, and when a Hollywood reporter asked her in 1958 about why she preferred Carrollton over Los Angeles, she said: “It’s a great place. No telephones ringing all day long, no big deals being made, no smog! People down there really know how to live – and relax.”

"Red-headed Academy Award winning actress Susan Hayward claimed she stayed under 118 pounds by eating 2 eggs (prepared any way) and one tomato three times a day for consecutive three days. “If you continue more than three days, you may start clucking like a hen,” Hayward said in an interview. Hayward claimed you could lose five pounds in three days with this diet, which seems highly doubtful to me. “Her (Susan Hayward) measurements are the same as they were when she was 20,” beauty columnist Lydia Lane wrote about the then 47-year-old actress in an Aug. 2, 1964, column, “Susan Hayward Gives Diet Tips.”
